Pure insanity, but seems weird he has another Mt Whitney in 21" for a BIN of $799, still about 10x too much IMO.

That dude really likes to ask for some high prices on cruisers too and dares call his operation "budgetbicyclecenter"

It's sad, but true: these things have gotten older, and harder to come by, and a niche-y market is emerging around the old-school mtb. Look at what has happened to old-school bmx, vintage american balloon bikes, and certain types of roadbikes! What used to be trash-picker fare has become collectible and, consequently, expensive under certain conditions.

I remember seeing old Ross mtbs and passing them up b/c i had zero interest at the time. (To be fair, they weren't xt-equipped and in condition as nice as this one, but I digress.) I shoulda bought 'em, put em in the basement, and waited 10 years (til now) to sell 'em for a grand on ebay. If i had only known. In those days, I only wanted newer/nicer stuff.

would I pay $1700 for that bike? No way. Is he asking too much? Apparently not, b/c it seems as though he found a buyer. Maybe he should've asked for more... Which possibly explains the $2700 one linked above.

My first MT Bike, and last bike under the x-mas tree from mom & dad, is a Ross Mt. Hood Hi Tech. Were these bike's any good in there day, or just average? I still have mine but its never really been off roaded, mostly a street and grass bike.

Only 2 Ross bikes are worth more than 100 bucks The all chrome Mt. Whitney and the Filet brazed Mt. Whitney.
Some have nice components like the deer head deraileurs and the bullmoose bars.

Sold mine for $300 and shipped it to JAPAN for $300

Kinda weird all the real collectible american MTBs are going to Japan and Germany and they pay big bucks for them....... I wonder if they'd want a Panasonic Mountain Cat back that I have??????

LOL I dont get it. these Ross bikes arnt any better than todays Magna's. I dont understand why anyone would spend more than what it is worth in scrap. LOL I dont know why,but here in Seattle people pay 200 plus for a 70's half ton Schwinn Varsity's covered in rust, and love those steel rims. those bikes were junk then, and dont know why that junk is a premium today. Now I understand collecting tank bikes and others of the sort, but 80's-90's Mountain bike's? Not even the good MTB's Realy? I wouldnt even consider the componets to be safe.

I got one in my shop a black & gold Mt. Hood that I'm getting ready to flip. I wouldn't say it is as low quality as current box store bikes, it is a bit heavy, but with a decent looking old US made lugged frame. Mine has all Shimano Deore components with Maillard hubs laced to gold anodized Weinmann wheels from Belgium. Do I think it's worth thousands of dollars? Not really but I hope someone else does. But if it doesn't sell for a decent price I plan to keep it and get rid my old Mongoose XR200 and use it for off road riding.
But yes I do find the ridiculous asking prices some people have on them incredible. Here's one that will blow your mind

Yes I have to agree with you guys on budget bicycle center. It's a overpriced bicycle shop in Madison, WI. I also happen to have a Ross frame that I need to sell. How much should one asked for it.

That guy at bbc bikes is a nostalgic bike collector that owns several shops in the area. He lists those prices as an attempt to say "If anybody is stupid enought to pay that, then im selling it and buying another", that is a direct quote from the guy himself. So yeah he never actually sells bikes its cheap advertising for his store with high overhead.
