Re: Mr. Mastodon *Update* 8-8-08 no more apes

I've decided to keep this one ratty. No fresh shiny paint here. It has just enough of the markings left to give it character.

I dug out some old schwinn grips with matching script to the logo on the bike. The left one even has two hole through it from where it was used to hold a bike on the wall at TGI Fridays.

Next it decided to recover the ugly blue banana seat. I was all over the board on what to cover it with. I started with one of my wife's old leather jackets, but I couldn't bring myself to cut it. Next, I found an old bandana, but the material was going to be too thin. I went in my closet to see what else I had. I found 12 old belts that had been hanging in there for years. They were all worn out and i never wear them. I figured there had to be something I could do with them. After about three hours and 50 or so rivets, this is what i came up with. If you can forget they are belts, I think it truned out pretty good.

Re: Mr. Mastodon *Update* 8-12-08 Grips & Custom Seat

What a great way to make my old ugly seat look good! I love it.

Re: Mr. Mastodon *Update* 8-12-08 Grips & Custom Seat

that seat is awsome very creative

Re: Mr. Mastodon *Update* 8-12-08 Grips & Custom Seat

Nice material use. I might have to wonder around the house to see what I can find. The bike looks great.

Re: Mr. Mastodon *Update* 8-12-08 Grips & Custom Seat

I love that seat, I also like the use of pop rivets. I bought a rivit gun for rebuilding my dirtbike silencer and havent used it since and love to think of ways to use it. I think this is a winner here, but I wont rip off the belt idea, that is to original. I would have to wait for others to rip it off numerous times before I felt ok, lol.

banana brooks
silly name but the seat is SWEET!

Ok, so i can't place what era the seat looks like it is from. I am getting a mix of Gladiator and Old West vibe with just a touch of the 70's.

Therefore I will name this seat "The Maximus Maverick"

So, Mr. Mastodon will be sporting the Maximus Maverick. (I do not plan on naming any of the other parts)

Oh, and thanks to everybody for the great comments!

Re: Mr. Mastodon *Update* 8-12-08 Grips & Custom Seat

I added a few more touches. I made a fender out of leather and aluminum, put an old bicycle license on it, added a railroad spike hood ornament and swapped out the pedals. I like how it is turning out. I'm close, but not quite done.

I started out with some aluminum stock and wrapped it around a wheel. then I added the leather to the top.

I got this old license a while back, cleaned it up and wrapped it on.

I found this spike while on an inspection for work. I sanded of the rust and zip tied it to the center of the handlebars and wrapped it in twine to cover the zip ties.

I also added a newer headbadge, the old one was cracked.

Re: Mr. Mastodon *Getting Close* 8-15-08 Leather Fender

yesterday I put the original cranks back in. The ones in the pictures above were way too long with the standard fork. I would scrape on every turn

The threads on the old crank were spaced different from any crank I had ever used before. I have a tub of parts, but I had to end up using the original races. They were the only ones that would fit. It that normal for a schwinn if this era?

Re: Mr. Mastodon *Getting Close* 8-15-08 Leather Fender

im not 100% but im pretty sure schwinn had there own size for the bottom bracket(maybe one of the schwinnaphiles will be able to say for sure.......) im still amazed at how great that seat looks!

Re: Mr. Mastodon *Getting Close* 8-15-08 Leather Fender
