This is my second entry in the build-off. It's a Dec.67 Fastback. I bought in July of 2014. I bought it from a man who's wife rode it as a child. The paint was very bad on it and I knew I would be repainting this one. The chainguard said it was originally a Ramshorn. I am putting this back together as a black 67 but with 68 handlebars. When I was a kid, one of my neighbors got a new black Fastback in 67. I loved riding that bike except I always found the handlebars very uncomfortable. So, since it's a December bike, I figure I can have the bars I prefer and everything is cool.

So far I've only had to replace the handlebars, seat, sissybar, chainguard, tires and tubes. All the rest is original as to what was on it when I bought it.

I used paint remover on it a few days ago, but it only managed to take off the color coat and only a little bit more.

After creating that mess, I decided to then have it sandblasted and powdercoated. So while I'm waiting on the frame, fork and chainguard to be finished up, I'll start cleaning some parts.

I'll start with the funky pedals. I cleaned one first to see if would look good. Now I hope the other one turns out that well.

More cleaning while waiting on the frame. The wheels have nice chrome, but there is some rim burn. I am not going to lace in mint S-5s. I'm definitely going to be riding this bike and I feel that some of its flaws are part of its character. This bike was ridden a lot by the girl that first owned it. I want the bike to remember how it got its start!

The rear slick is an original, but not to this bike. The front is a repop, but it looks every bit as nice as the originals. Even has the 3 date code circles on it.
This photo shows all the parts that have been cleaned and polished so far. I'm going to leave the original decals on the shifter because they are still in good condition, just faded a little. The shifter knob is a different story. The 5 has been rubbed away from use. That I have to redo.

The decals are waiting on the frame also.

That chrome looks amazing, hard to believe it is nearly 50 years old!

Luke.
That's the great automotive grade chrome Schwinn used.

All the parts are cleaned and polished. Only thing left to do before getting the frame, fork and chainguard back from the powdercoater, is to refurbish the shifter ball.

Started on the Stik Shift handle. I prepped the knob by fine sanding and then a tack rag. Sprayed the black and had fish eye all over the place. Cleaned it again and shot it very lightly with etching primer. Slowly repeated light primer coat until the fish eye problem settled down. The plastic knob must retain oil. I've seen this with other plastic products before.

After allowing the primer to dry, I painted it black. I will let it alone for a while before I place the stencil on it to paint the silver number 5 on it.

The shifter ball is finished and I have nothing else to do until the frame comes back.
