Starting from scratch, with only a vague idea and some heavyweight galvanized tubes, we started building. Nothin' on paper, all in the head. Inspired by 2 bikes from Kenny P.,a bike is fried together, existing from old and new tubing, second hand parts and lots of fun.
Some of you have seen this heap of steel before, on another forum. It may be finished next week, we're throwing some paint on it now.
Should there be someone out there, who wants to see the endresult, let me now.

After a few hundred miles of shere pleasure, in a flash, it was clear to me. What I needed, was a bigger frontwheel. Being a bit unstabile on straight tracks and long curves, I convinced myself of the idea, that a 28" wheel would do the trick. And so it seems, after the first testrun. At least 90% better handling and 10% better looks (to my opinion). Next step is a wider rim on the back. We'll see...

 
Working on fat rearwheel, with 80 mm rim. Hopefully it 'll be strong enough to survive 44 kg of tubing (tools included) and 85 kg of human tissue. :mrgreen: More pics will follow.


 
nahhh...i just know bikes that have caught my eye before 8)
i saw T.M.C.s down fly as well with its new owner( looked like he was enjoying it as well)....dont forget we like pictures when the updates are done!
 
Wimpy, my first three thoughts were, in order,
"heck yes, that bike is awesome!"
"look at those handlebars!" and
"Needs a bigger front wheel." (I'm partial to 29ers, so you can't blame me)

It was great before, but that bigger wheel adds at least 11% better looks, maybe even 12%. I'm not a usually a fan of long bikes, but I would ride this one across the globe if I got the chance.

44kg??? Did you use solid metal rods for the frame? :wink:
 
@sensor: The downfly-dude lives in the same town, I live in and we've done a few cruises together. And yes, he's very pleased with it. So pleased, that he's even selling his Basman bikes.

@Jimmybug: Thanx for your comment. If the bike puts a smile on somebodies face, I'm happy too. 'Bout the frontwheel, I've allready gone from 26" to 28". But normal 29" wheels and tyres are hard to come by, I think. Most of it is ATB-stuff. Somewhere this week, I hope to pick up my rearwheel at the bikeshop. Fingers crossed, hoping that it all fits. If it doesn't, I made a miscalculation.
You're not the onlyone, who looked surprised about its weight. When I put it on the scale, I thought the scale was broken.....it wasn't. But at the same time, the reading gave me an explanation for my current loss of weight. I think its so heavy, because there's quite a lot of tubing used for the build. It's 10 ft long and tubediameter is about 1,5"(35 mm). The base-tube is about 2,5"(60 mm). And it's all galvanised steel (not lightweight aluminium :cry: ) But being a very comfy ride, I'd take it for a spin around the globe as well. Who knows........ :mrgreen:
 
wheel looks great on there :mrgreen: and good to know about shimano/sram compatibility....
i guess that says something about kamilos' builds if hes selling his basman and keeping the downfly
 
@sensor:The compatibility of Shimano twistgrip/SRAM hub is good on the 3-speed items. If it works for other types from both Shimano and SRAM, I'm not sure.

And finally a pic of the whole bike. Personally, I think a 3" Kenda would give it a fatter look, but I have to be sure, the tyre isn't wider than the rim. If it is, it would be a "chainscraper". And I don't wanna waste valuable cruisin'time, modifying it with offsetsprockets and so on. We'll see....
