We are building a bike for a customer. At first we were going traditional but I decided to plate a few areas which of course requires some welding. The customer wants something long, low, and traditional. He also wants the 50's look since he is a custom car guy but no rock-a-silly flat black. He also wants a classy clean look without all the added do-dads that everyone mucks up the lines of their bikes with. Fortunately for the budget we wont be building a frame as he dropped one off that he had ordered.

here is the sketch we agreed on

first step: wheels and tires

3G wheels ordered from the site and 1 3/4 Kendas for the low profile look

Pieces of a Monark style fork I have been working on. New lowers mounts had to be made to fit the larger axle diameter, mount the fender struts and fit the outside of the fork to fit the hub size. I milled some bushing out of oil-light material I had laying around for smooth suspension action.

Street sweeper fenders really have the lead sled look so I called in a favor and had a pair sent to me.

Re: Cha-Cha-Cha Cherry Bomb

Coming from the hotrod world I have nosed and decked more than my fair share of cars. You can either smooth the hood, fender and deck lid or add a peak. Peaking started way back with the coach builders in the 30s. Peaking a panel isn't hard but it isn't done often now days since everyone likes the "smooth" look. I don't know if anyone has ever peaked the top tube of a bike but I thought it was another good custom touch to keep with the theme and another angle for the pain to glow off of.

the peak will flow into the insert.

Re: Cha-Cha-Cha Cherry Bomb

Glad you moved the build over here and continued in BO8.
The more and more I see those 3G wheels, I just might have to gets me some.

Change in plans. Our customer came by just as we were leaving to go to dinner. I was one the Invalid Trike we built a few months ago. He took one look at the lace job and instead of a red subtle flame job we are going with a much more 60s style paint scheme.

top tube peak welded in and in final primer.

it flows into the welded in seat tube insert and out the back side.

Love the new color and the peaking you did look way cool.

Re: Lemon Lime Stardust Fascination

Ahhh... yes. Yellow with red wheels and whitewalls... I love that combo. Reminds of my old bike "Sun King".

Can't wait to see more.

Re: Lemon Lime Stardust Fascination

Very old trick. My dad showed it to me in the mid 80s. He painted his altered with a lace panel job in the mid 60s. Not sure where he got it from. It seems like a lot of people are using it for their borrowed ideas this build off.

Anyhow. Customs are smooth. No need for fender bolt to be showing. Welded these in and ground them down. A little filler will make them disappear.

Re: Lemon Lime Stardust Fascination

Nice work. I've done peaked fenders and tanks before but haven't seen a peaked frame(until now). Little things like that and shaving unnecessary things go a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG way to make a sweet custom(although 98% of the world wouldn't ever notice it, unless told). Looking forward to seeing more.
