Issue with the BB bearings... Gone!

Sadly the drive side crank threads are stripped so can't use my puller.
Nice tall (22 1/2") frame. I don't even need to move the seat post!

Serious problems in the BB area! Unable to pull sprocket side crank from axle as threads are wrecked for puller. Then after removal of axle, I see threads are roached.

Looks like previous owner just rode the bike without bearings!
IMG_1024.JPG

There is maybe 75% of the threads left, so I thought notch the bearing cup and maybe it can chase the threads.

Kinda sorta worked. Don't quite trust it tho, so I added 2 tack welds.

It's a ratty solution, but frame would be scrap otherwise and I want to see how comfortable I would be on this bike.

That stem is massive.

Original crankset was toast.
IMG_1031.JPG

Replaced with Vintage SR Sakae Ringo XCE triple mountain bike crankset 175mm 48/38/28 with Enhanced Oval Tech from the stash.
IMG_1036.JPG

First time trying a bio pace oval type crank.
IMG_1034.JPG

Also added some used quality alloy pedals.
IMG_1050.JPG

Front derailier is a "Charger" brand. Looks pretty well made and may be fixable?

The Lee Chi Sine Power brakes look cool but the back brake barely works and someone broke the front lever off probably trying to stop this tank.

May have to try other brake options if I can't get these working...

Had to raise the seat about an inch to get proper leg extension.
Almost to tall for me to ride comfortably now. Bottom bracket must be a little higher than what I'm used to. Kinda liking the oval crank.

I've never worked with brakes like that. How are they mounted? On posts like cantilever brakes? That would be a big upgrade! Otherwise, a u brake on the bridge might be simplest. I think that would still be an improvement in braking performance.

From the web:
Lee Chi Sine Power Brake.
Center pull scissor style caliper found on '80s road bikes.
Aluminum construction.
Long reach.
90mm maximum reach from mount bolt center to pad center.

Maybe replace with these caliper brakes. They are described as "long reach".

They look to mount like caliper brakes - single post. Would be cool if you could use the base casting to mount v-brakes or cantilever brakes but probably not... :p

Yeah, those tektros look good, there's enough adjustability at the shoes to fit a lot of places. Tektros are a good choice, functional, quality, just not "handmade by virgins on the slopes of Mount Olympia" quality.

Online they say these are made of sheet metal - steel?
Even though these pics make the brakes out to be rusty they are just dirty ole cast alloy aluminum.

All the cheap Huffys/Murrays I have seen have the steel, side pull brakes that you throw out. The only cheap 10/12 speeds that don't have them are the ones that are nicer, but not as good as the Varsity. Those usually have steel, center pull brakes. The bikes I am talking about are cheaper than the Schwinn Varsity.

Well, got to cleaning up there brakes and they are chrome plated steel!
IMG_1209.JPG

They have to be better than the Lee Chi's.

Interesting original parts mix on bike.

Road center pulls would be good for stopping that tank. They are stronger than side pull brakes. I have a long reach Dia Compe one on one of my road bikes that has a 68cm frame, so it is pretty heavy.
