I was born and raised in the 'Hardware City', New Britain CT. I moved away 15 years ago but I still have some fond memories. I certainly have some hard learned lessons.
At one time New Britain was a manufacturing mecca. They made everything there from beer

and countless others. Trolleys ran through the city and the factories ran night and day. This one ran right down Main Street.

It was a great place to live right up to the 1960's

In the 1970's the factories started leaving, along with the jobs. It was about that time the city decided that a highway through the city was just what we needed. I've been told by my elders that it was really all about construction project funding and greased palms.
Lots of buildings were torn down and the highway split the cty in two.

Worst of all in my young mind was the fact they ruined the bmx trail area not far from my house. I used to go there everyday.

Such is life I guess. Here are some New Britain landmarks CT residents might recognize.

Here's a place that makes world famous chili dogs. It's said they been offered a million dollars for their chili recipe.

Jimmy's Smoke Shop. Aplace to buy cigarettes, bus tickets, newspapers and adult magazines. They've been around forever.

Amato's hobby shop, a place to buy rockets train sets and model cars.

New Britain has a very large Polish community and this place makes the best kielbasa in town. That's saying something.

Fantastic pics thanks for sharing! when the work goes its a shame to see communitys just collapse.....You've Inspired me to do one of my area!

great posting.

the company I work at just bought a building on Peter Court in New Britski, and we'll be moving from the Dirty Den (Meriden) to there the week of June 7th.

Looking forward to being a regular at J.Timothy's (Plainville I know, but near by), and Fatherland (polish restaurant around corner from new building) and CJ's, right across the street.

I can't wait to eat at world famous Capitol Lunch. I hear about it a lot on food shows and such on CPTV.

I'm already a big fan of Walnut Hill Park (undergoing major renovations right now to the infield), since racing there in the 80s-90s. Will be riding a single speed up there at lunch.

I know exactly where that is! I grew up not far from there. When I was young we lived on Benson Street which is off South Street. I've eaten at Fatherland, great food. Paradise Pizza on South Street has great chicken cordon bleau. I remember when South Street bridge was an iron and timber bridge!
Did you ever go to the Polish festival in N.B. when they used to shut Broad street down? Pierogies and cold beer. That was a good party!

never been to the Polish Fest. I bet it's great. I know very little about New Britain except for Walnut Hill Park, which is a jewel.

Thanks for those photos and history. This post came just in time. As Ian said we are moving in a couple of weeks and I know nothing about New Britain except for Stanley Tools and that the Art Museum is critically acclaimed.

can we ride to Capitol from the new building Ian?

hey loco-joe, not all of Connecticut is like the movies. Lots of it is, which is why I still live here, but some sections are almost as bad as any in the nation.

You did a fantastic job of presenting your area. The history really makes the present understandable to one (myself) who has no idea of what your city and the area have been thru.

I work with people in the present Stanley company every day. Looks like they changed alot from New Britain days.

Great job on this +100.
