I found this about a year ago at Long Beach vintage bike swap meet. I was on the fence about doing anything to it because I really liked the patina but part of my motivation to do it was because the undercarriage and moving parts were so crusty, and the seat was broken on one side. So I wanted to do it in a way that it was mechanically sound but preserved some of the original patina..

Disassembled, sand blasted body, and purchased replacement parts..

I bought some motorcycle exhaust tips and had my buddy at a local Hot Rod shop welded them on and also fixed the broken seat.

Masked off the flames and did matte black patina paint job..

I had originally painted the rims orange but I wasn't feeling it so I stripped them and realized that the metal with white wall was the way to go. I also did the seat and had a buddy do the process blue pinstripes on the flames.

My boy is only two so he doesn't know how to use the pedals yet so I installed a little plywood floorboard for now..

Pretty neat, I started out liking the yellow but the black sets it off. Nicely done!

Another thing that's kinda cool is that I used gorilla tape and magnets to install my MegaBoom bluetooth speaker under the hood so we can blast some oldies while cruising. This was my sons first classic cruise night a while back..

Honestly, my first thought was: "Oh no, he's gonna ruin it!" But man, you really made it pop! If my boys were younger, they would love to ride this beauty!

I think you did a fantastic job on that pedal car! It looked great the way you got it, but the black paint helps those flames POP, and the little velocity stacks are a nice touch. Good luck keeping up with your kid once he learns how to use the pedals! He'll be racing everyone in style in no time!

A couple of weeks after I completed pedal car build I ended up finding this toy pedal car for $10 bucks on OfferUp. Although it is a pretty standard hot rod color scheme it was still a little bizarre how similar it is, and that I found it after I finished mine..
