Household cleaning products are 80% chemical water conditioners. Calcium magnesium and Lyme are the sworn enemy of wash stuff appliances. Rain water has a decimal value of hardness and extremely low TDS. This makes it a really effective solvent when it comes in contact with the cements etc. Those things splash onto your bicycle. A really good example is black fender wells. That haze on them is the dissolved solids from the road. Washing the bike first is important. I typically blast out the frame tubing with my pressure washer. I also check the water again after the bike has been in there for a little bit. The scaling will dissolve quickly into the bath and if there is enough of it it is going to raise the acid demand. It's not really critical if you start with a 2pH target but if you are just using litmus paper or test strips you can't really get that accurate a measurement

@nosferatu1381 Can you give us your basic bike frame baking recipe for dummy's . I can bake a cake but I burnt all the paint off my last frame .
High heat low pH / approaching 180° approaching 2ph. It is really only meant to reveal the paint. If you frame has bare spots you are going to have to use phosphoric gel on those after if is done. I should be able to do these tomorrow. I get my glasses back today. All this nonesense messed up my optometrist schedule. This is the first appt I could get since I lost mine. I was just putting less than 12oz of acid in this 50 gallon tub and adding boiling water to keep it in suspension and getting good results. Oven cleaner for chrome and nickel, keep brass and unpainted parts out of the bath they turn in into a plating tub

It's not taking me more than an hour. I have a water treatment system I put on my house so my water quality it pretty high. You may have to look at my charts to get the same results. I am going to run it in bypass when I do this bath though. You can see here there is no precipitation on the frame. If it starts to "snow" in your solution you are too cold

You can always call me and I can walk you through it over the phone too man. My phone number is listed in my Facebook account

Another nother thing, the paint they use on these bikes can handle some pretty heavy duty solutions. Sometimes what looks like factory was just a really skilled repaint and it going to vanish. Oven cleaner will remove "house" paints. I typically stop on the way home at a car wash with those dopey rattle canned "garden" bikes. The ones they painted all one color and find out they have original paint underneath. There is one of those in the barn now I will probably do that with later.

This is the next one I would like to see what's under the spray paint . Hopefully I can save the white accents on the head tube and fork ?
What would recommend for this brass head badge ?View attachment 135512View attachment 135513View attachment 135511
i would spray a little "regular strength oven cleaner on a the corner of a sponge or a cue tip and do a test spot. the brass in a headbadge changes everything. I have used oven cleaner at the car wash and found a beautifully enameled badge under house paint. i can't remember the last acid etched badge i did though, I think it wound up on Gary here

he was really really fast *hysterical laughter* i should have put that one in the gallery downtown but I gifted it to one my club founders. I would also try goo gone or peanut butter even ketchup believe it or not. when iron oxide tranfers to something like that it is a different process

Funny story, these are the same bike. "oven cleaner paint reveal" sometimes you find out it has been repainted sixteen different times will all kinds of different paint and oh well whatever that's just how the cookie crumbles.

This one was listed on Craigslist as a Colson rear steer tandem. I bought it anyway so I could cut that 37 Dayton Huffman out of it

My wife surprised me by laughing at this, it must be because it is at your house not mine...
Yeah, I have a small stone "out house" planned for the back yard for me. It will be a walk in shower with a nice stone bench and the toilet in there. That way I have my own place to hide from them outside. Plus those days where she hands me a change of clothes at the door and says you are not coming in here like that
