Just picked this up for $40 on sale at a local antique shop this morning. I had to drop it off at home and run to work so didn't have time to get it cleaned up or get good pics. I know I have been away from the site for a long time but I am glad to say I am back and it feels good to get to build something again. Already have new tires, tubes, rim strips, and new grips ordered. Has some nice mini apes on it and some 80’s bmx style grips that will go to my parts bin. Anyone have any info on it by looking at it?

Just in time for Build Off 15
AMF Skyrider. Probably late 60s early 70s middleweight. Shame it doesn't have the star chainring that some years had.
Start a build thread for it in the BO15 section.

Looks good! The pedals aren't banged up and look like the originals. The rack looks good too can't tell if you got both fenders from the pic.
I came across a serial number list that may ID the year of the bike. The letter at the beginnning of the number gives the date. After 63 (N) I'm guessing they kept going in order but I'm not sure if they skipped the "O" like they did the "I" to avoid confusion. I'm guessing it's a 68-70 (U-W), 71 and later had the BMA6 decal near the top of the seat tube.

I did get both fenders although the rear has some rust on one side that is being stubborn the rest cleaned up really well and yes they are chrome peaked fenders. The pedals are in great shape but one is stuck pretty good in the crank arm (crank is bent) but I got it to move back and forth a 1/4 turn so I think with some persuasion it may come out. The pedals also have no reflector so that tells me they very likely could be the original ones. The rack is in great shape other than a slight bend I made trying to get the bike disassembled but should be an easy fix. After lots of cleaning I think I am going to just clear the patina and call it a day... It just looks too good to have it any other way. Thanks for the info I will look at the serial number tomorrow and see what I can find.
 
Well I was bored waiting on parts for the Skyrider/ American Gentleman build so I thought I'd go check out Studio Black Antiques again and show off my progress. He loved seeing the bike totally transformed. I saw another Skyrider and I couldn't stop myself. He said he'd part with it for $40 so another bike followed me home. This one looks to be in better shape but is not the deluxe model so no rack but has nice painted fenders, decent painted rims, and no tank. (Other bike's tank is missing)

Anyone know tricks for removing the repaint without harming the original paint? I've heard of this being done before but it's been a while since I have been on here.
 
Went yard saleing for the first time this year and at the first sale of the day I scored this for $10!!! Yes please. Looks to be an early 90s Haro Extreme mountain bike. Really cool cash guard on the front, a rack on the back, and it's so 90's it's cool. Aired up the tires and took it for a short ride. Rear gears aren't working so I'll have to look at that but front shifted well and this bike is light and fast. Can't wait to get it tuned and serviced and go shread some trails.

Just curious what are these worth nowdays?

I saw a complete newer one listed a few months ago for $225 Canadian, wouldn't be surprised to see one for $400 today, the market is going bonkers right now.
They're solid bikes, high quality, just not what the brand was famous for. That bar on there is cool too, lots of hand positioning!
 
I agree with Matti's assessment on the value.

Personally if I were going make it a singletrack ripper, the rack, big ring, small ring, and front derailleur would go. I'd also swap those bars out for maybe some Easton EA-50's, or even something with a little more rise in order to make up for the largely road-centric geometry.

Either way, hit that paint up with some quality carnauba wax to bring back the shine and protect it for when you bring it onto the dirt. That color is the jam.

Trails here are paved. But a largely downhill trail that twists and turns and crosses 27 miles.

I like them. Adds a bit of crash protection and brush guard for your hands when you're riding through the woods or on over grown trails.
 
Hadn't thought about the protection factor. I like the idea of all the hand positions for longer rides. Dunno if I'd feel confident using them on a trail though. I'd like to try a set, but I like weird and unusual, which is why I want an e-stay as well.
 
Well I was at work like any other day and I get a customer that came in on bike for spray paint. I got to talking with him and he's a local bike flipper so I mentioned I am trying to sell a few and happened to have a mountain bike in my car. Long story short I traded my 90's Haro I paid $10 for for a nice Iron Horse fat bike. I didn't get pics yet but here's a pic to show the tires and wheels.

That is next to my friend's Dodge Ram on 31's.
