The other day when I did one of the early mockups I very roughly threw this upside down Hawthorne skirt guard against it for future reference. Obviously I still have to work on placement and marrying it to the Elgin frame. But I really like this. When I found the above picture today, it pulled me in even more.

I won't be using it as a gripping surface. There will still be grips on the bars. I'll also secure the ends of the braided sleeves. Are you saying that it frays easily in the middle? Seems like it would have to be nicked before it frays. Does it nick that easily?

Depends on how much its handled , its not the A&N aircraft quality , the ends will always haunt you unless you find a way to wrap them good .

My welding buddy should have time this week to extend my steer tube, so I broke down the Evanaction. It's always fun digging into the bowels of these old springers and seeing how they actually work. These photos are for reference purposes. Relitively simple to disable the parts I needed too. Should go back together easy.

I also pulled a Murray fork to use as the steertube donor. I hope to cut and prep these tomorrow.

Believe me, disassembling it a few months ago - for what may have been the first time in years - took an impact screwdriver and some sweat. Glad to see it didn't give you the same trouble this time around.

Can you give the handlebar wrap a very light coat of a polyester resin? Just enough to soak in but not enough to kill the texture. Might help protect it some???

I like that idea. I might even be able to get some cool effects if I use a varnish of something. I'll play around with that concept when the time comes.

Ever since someone told me that the Evanaction was designed by Earl, I have been admiring some of his work. I think one of his best cars was the Buick Y Job. You can't help but be drawn to the grille and fender treatment.

The other day I had an idea to get that grille effect in the space between the twin top tubes using spokes joined by nipples and the ends from a couple of hubs. Here is my first rough experiment.

While I had the "grille" in hand I decided to see how it would look on the side below the top tubes.

That looks freakin good! Either spot, but partial to top because it looks good between the 2 bars.

One of our stops last Christmas was Oslo, Norway where I picked up this large crystal decanter stopper because it just screamed taillight to me.

Tonight I took it out to the shop to try it out with a red bike light.
It's actually a deeper red than the pics. The white edges are just reflective light from the autofocus light.

I like the idea with the spokes but toss the hub and just use some flat metal stock cut to whatever shapes you want for each end, brass or copper would be cool...

Thanks, It's not necessarily an either or choice. Could even be both. I won't know for sure until I get the fork done. Gotta be able to step back and see how it plays with the whole deal.

No way am I not using part of the hub. The re-purposing of that is one of my favorite parts to this idea. I may play with different size hubs to see what fits the front and rear. I don't plan to use the whole hub. I would remove the guts of course, but then cut down to just the bearing cup and spoke ring or maybe just the spoke ring.
If I use the side grille, then I probably will use a full hub minus the guts. It just the right size to work for both side of the frame.
