Well I’m finally allowed to have my Christmas present! Turns out Santa wife also got me most of the parts I wanted for Christmas. Since this is my bucket list bike I won’t be waiting for a build off. Plans to tear it down tonight after the festivity’s with the kids. Lots of cleaning and detailing with not a lot of modification besides the handlebars and accessory stuff like tires.

I also have a red chain because I’m obsessed with color matches!

Wife told me I could go play in the basement after I started all the food. Had to drill one of the chain guard screws and it turns out the original crank is bent. Kind of a let down because I wanted to use it but I’ll save it and just run something modern!

Dropstep:
Cranks can usually be straightened out with some combination of a vice, piece of pipe, big wrench, and/or other means of persuasion. If not, the crank on that bike is a pretty standard item. Check out items for sale on this forum.

It looks like the vacuum chroming has worn off (evaporated from?) your chainwheel cap. That's usually the case. I've dealt with that on a couple of bikes by spray painting the cap with chrome or silver and touching up the red trim by hand. I'll take some pics and post those later.

For inspiration (I hope that it has that effect) is a pic of my Spaceliner.

Have fun and happy holidays!

Tested the rust remover on the chain guard. Works fantastic. The hole in the chain guard is a bit rough but I’m still going to use it. Some before pictures of the frame. Hoping to start cleaning that up tomorrow in between my in laws Christmas party’s

Your Spaceliner is starting out better than mine did. What are you using for rust remover? I started with WD-40 and 0000 steel wool but switched to paint stripper and a bronze wire wheel in a drill. Then the WD-40 and steel wool. The bikes are clear coated with some really good stuff that is a bear to remove.

Had a little bit of time today, started on the rear triangle a bit to test out the krud kutter. My boss swears by the stuff and it worked great on a painted fork. Only had time to let it sit an hour and I’m happy. Seems like a lot of the chrome will come back. I don’t expect perfect but I’ll polish whatever is left!

Photo dump. Frame is about as clean as I think it will get with this method. Some of the rust was bad enough the chrome plating is gone. Front wheel cleaned up great. All the hub parts took a purple power soak and look good. Now that everything’s been scrubbed I’ll work on taking the rust off the back wheel, rack mount, sprocket and that awesome front fork

Reassembled the wheels. Have to fix a few loose spokes tomorrow. Fork is back on and it led me too a stopping point, I don’t know what the heck I want to do for handlebars yet. Trying not too bmx bar this one but it might just happen. Cruiser bars are out because I can’t lean forward when I ride.

maybe mini apes?

You are going to have to go with something curvy to fit in with the frame. I know you said no BMX, but these Cuppini bars...

If you are looking for something more classic, which is which way I'd go, Nitto has some neat-o:

Not sure what these are:

I used Wald 898 bars on my Spaceliner, along with a taller gooseneck (stem?) to get the bars a little higher so my knees don't hit on turns. I like lots of pullback so I can sit up straighter when I ride.

On the other hand, it's your bike, you make it how you like it! LOL

Took the shakedown ride on the spaceliner and my twin who now has the pre 53 scwhinn. The cwc has some miles on it but had a blast riding with the kids until I had to come home and rebuild the front wheel on the spaceliner again because I went light on the grease too prevent a mess while building it.
