Another idea? Since the main build off is an annual event. How about the top 13 vote getters ( leave the actual count hidden) go into a vote off for #1. The top bike would be the cover bike for the next year calendar with each remaining bikes getting a month photo. The calendar could even be the prize for the competitors getting in the top 13. You could even have each entrant required to order the next years calendar as an "entry fee" of sorts. That should give a base of at least 100 calendars sold before production even begins.

I don't know, but it seems like if we keep doing the same thing, we will keep having the same results. I would hate to see contributing members walk away for any reason.

If nothing else, I kind of like this top 13 make it into the calendar idea. Seems like a sweet prize to me.

Clearly my style of bike is not welcomed here ..
All bikes are welcome here , I love your bike but with so many bikes to pick from and only 3 votes it was really tough this time around , don't feel bad I am in the bottom with you and I am ok with it , I built my bike for me and I am happy with it no matter how many votes it gets , and the day a type of bike isn't welcome would be a sad day , we all learn from all the different styles and shapes of the bikes on here and I hope it stays that way

Hmm, I had the blues last year after putting a lot of time and effort into a build I was sure would be a hit, but wasn't. If you built it for everyone elses approval, like I thought I did, you missed the point. Expectations will drive you nuts, don't let them. Your like your bike? I like it a lot, but regardless of how I feel, it's still your bike.

Carl.

I voted for ya man... how could I not after seeing it in person and seeing you ride rings around the rest of the bikes that day. You did one hexx of a job making that frame.

I think it would be cool if the voting was not done via secret ballot. I think a lot of us suspect, at least for a moment, that everybody is voting for themselves and 2 other bikes they think have no chance of winning. I'm pretty sure this is not the case, but it kind of feels that way when you look at the voting totals. I think it would be interesting to see who has voted, and who they voted for. In other walks of life I have found that people vote differently when that info is public.

I don't harbor any such suspicion. The numbers don't seem to reflect that to me. I guess somebody might do it, but I seriously doubt that many do. I also think that voting being affected by disclosure is not necessarily a good thing. How ya gonna enjoy playin' bikes with someone who is or who you think may be second guessing your votes? None the less, if it's all good to you I'm sure you're aware you are free to divulge your choices. I picked 15, 28, and 63.

I have been in a few build-off's and have been able to climb the ladder to the top.
Being a girl in boys world and winning the Winter build -off was a great accomplishment for me.I don't even think I made the top 10 this time around.
But that just wants me to build more and improve my skills.
We have sub builds all year around, the annual is for you all to get in and have fun. It's not like you win anything, this year only a handful of people donated prizes,I don't understand what the fuss is about.
Enter a comp,build a bike you want,and have fun,it's simple.
What is upsetting is that there are hundreds of members on this site, and only a handful who participate in the build offs or vote?
And even less moderators who help keep the site running...:113::41:

Just build,and have fun.
Why do feel like I'm in a mens powder room?:giggle:

Nice choices deorman.I would ride all 3 of them.

If you all must know, when I vote the first vote always goes to me,myself and I...I deserve to vote for myself. If you don't like your own build then what?
82. The Weenie Wagon - Funkme
My other 2 votes went to
6. Artemus - Falstaff - Why? Loved the whole wagon style look and that he could interchange it into a normal bike with a couple turns of a spanner.

32. Gasser - horsefarmer - Why? Everytime I look at it,it brings a big smile and reminds me of my childhood.I think of fun & laughter.

This year it was all about fun.of course you can't vote for all .
In the past I have voted for quality, style & looks and my fave builders at times.(They know who they are:grin:)

Not this year but maybe try it with the winter build off

Thanks Funk, I thought you were one of my votes. I'm glad you like it.
Love the Weenie Wagon too,by the way. How's the steering?

About voting categories… there's nothing stopping people from doing their own sub-categories. I did one for Best Ladies Frame and decided what bikes to include. Renaissance Man did one for Best Photo and chose to include all entries except his own.

Since putting up the Best Ladies Frame voting thread, I also thought of doing a Best Unfinished one for everyone that didn't make the deadline, but decided not to this time. The point is, if you want to start a thread for a particular category such as Best Paint or Best Wheel/Tyre Combination or whatever, then just do it. It's your thread so you make the rules for voting in it. You decide what gets put there to be voted on. You decide what, if any, prize there is. It's pretty simple really o_O

I did my voting a few days ago and went for 5, 75 and 85.

Glen.

If your statement "when you look at the voting totals" supporting that absurd suspicion that people vote for themselves, and then 2 others that they think have no chance of winning were true, this current poll would look nothing like that at all! That also assumes a "zero integrity" attitude among the builders that they would not honorably vote for their favorite builds; whatever criteria they may be using.

+1 on deorman...I actually sent a very similar reply to this quote before I read this.

wait...we have powder rooms? :nerd:

I shared the following sentiment with a fellow builder, shortly after all the bru-ha-ha about voting began. Maybe it's worth sharing with the rest of you all:
" I guess when things turn political it brings out the worst in people. Other guys talking about who's getting votes and who's not is losing sight of the reason for the community. Some of the people are keeping a good perspective fortunately. I'm as competitive as the next guy, more than most, but I see this voting process as more of a way to recognize the talents and creativity than to pick winners and losers."
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Each one of our builds has it's own unique quality of beauty, which each of us holds onto dearly. If we didn't care what our builds turned out like, this whole thing would be in shambles. Let's celebrate the diversity and creativity of the rat rod bicycle and continue to support this very unique on-line community with the same gusto that was present during the builds.

Classes wont work because then it would be who is the top rat in the end. I think it needs to go back to stock production frame no cutting of the frame at all even brackets. Stuff can be bolted to or welded to. For those who want to scratch build or hack up a production frame either have an outlaw class or a separate build off. To me what MADE the build off so hard was the frame had to be stock so a builder really had to think outside the box. Ironically kingfish's bike totally gets that i dont think the frame was modified. Its an awesome peice.

Then the name should be changed from Build Off to Assemble Off.

build
bild/
verb
  1. 1.
construct by putting parts or material together over a period of time.
This is the first definition that came up for the word "build". I believe what you are insinuating is this word:
cre·ate
krēˈāt/
verb
  1. bring (something) into existence.
synonyms: produce, generate, bring into being, make, fabricate, fashion
It was a "Build Off". Not a "Create Off".

If one is into statistics.....I think your chances of getting any votes become smaller and smaller when the field is larger.. but then again, I've failed math at least three times(Or was it four?)

If you didn't get any votes, it sin't because nobody liked your bike, I assure you. I really hated not voting for the other favorites I had because I know how much work it takes and honestly all the bikes were way better than my builds anyway.

After we do the first round of voting, how about another re vote with the top three eliminated, and more votes per voter? I'm thinking ten percent of the entries , like in high school everyone wanted to be in the top ten percent of the class.

Just remember how hard it is to choose when you go to your next bike show and thank the judges for their hard work! Peoples choice awards are even worse, with only ONE to choose.
I would actually be against categories. The year we did that, I felt like the scratch builts/modifieds didn't get near the attention, so that I felt like the redheaded step-child in the build off. I felt like I had to qualify my placement, when it was mentioned. "I placed 6 out of the 27 in my category." I'd rather say, "I placed 11th out of everyone that entered, which was over a hundred bikes internationally." Those examples were two years ago and last year, respectively. The bikes are all different, and that's what's cool about it.

I would support subcategories, if someone wanted to. When you go to a bike show, there are subcategories for best paint. Best vintage. Best custom. But in the end, every bike there has the possibility of winning best of show, which is what this voting determines. Don't take away a bike's chance of best of show just because you feel you might do better in a smaller bike pool. Don't take away my chance of best of show because I made my frame from scratch.

c1run1, your bike is beautiful, and would probably win over all of these at a show like Shiny Side Up. But this is RAT Rod Bikes. I wouldn't expect mine to clean up on this site if I built that. Wrong crowd. It's a pretty bike, though. I dig it.

Agreed ! how ever some members are getting the wrong point its not about being " first Place " Personally i feel Ford Snake bike has better then mine in regards to having all elements from fabrication to fitment , As so does The renaissance man's bike .
The point i have here is why are people who have no clue about the build off allowed to vote ? There are members fishing for votes from family and friends via facebook or twitter like they are running for President . They only join the sight to vote for there friend .
Maybe there should be a so sort of format for a new member to have to wait a period of time before they are allowed to vote ? That is why you have so many members that don't vote because they don't come back any more .
And the Build off should have either classes and or stock frame as some one else mentioned .

AGAIN, I don't really think that is what is happening.
