Down south in a sleepy little town outside of Fort Worth, Texas lives a fellow by the name of Clyde James. He ain’t known for his fast draw nor his bronc busting abilities. No sir, old Clyde is better known in these parts for what he does with paint and a welder. Yes by golly, Mr. James is a custom bike builder in these parts known for taming cold blue steel. He’s earning his reputation as one of the more talented builders in the great state of Texas.
Clyde’s been involved in building and fabrication for quite a while now. Actually though, he didn’t start off building bikes. While in his twenties he worked for a company building custom homes and commercial buildings. He learned a lot about hard work and structural engineering during that time.
From there he went on to work in the custom car industry where he learned about fabrication and how to weld. They built custom frames for cars and trucks and also did frame restorations. In his spare time he started playing around with bike frames because it allowed him to express his creative side and he was able to build whatever he wanted to.
“Here at Clyde James Cycles we offer unique handmade bicycles custom fit for you. Our designs and styles give our customer all the options they need to create a bicycle that is personalized. We build many different styles of bikes, so no matter what you are looking for, we can help you create it. We offer custom paint, air brushing, pin striping and powder coating. We also offer a large variety of parts and accessories to customize your bike. Vintage bicycle restorations are another option we offer our customers. We can paint or recreate stickers and graphics to give that old vintage bicycle a makeover and bring it back to life. We also sell new bicycles. Some of the brands we carry are 3G Bikes, Lowrider Bicycle, BMX and cruiser bicycles. We are your one stop custom bicycle shop and are working hard to earn your business.”
One of Clyde’s more recent creations is a bike called “Cream Soda.” He told us this about the project…
“The motivation behind this build was my friend Don, he came to me wanting a custom bicycle and wanted it to look old school with a new school twist. So the build started just like any other design and in just under two months, Cream Soda was born. This build wasn’t all just CJC though. We had a lot of talented individuals making unique custom pieces for this build. Woody’s Fenders did all the custom wood work, from the wood fenders to the custom wood tank and the bottom bracket wood inlays. Cody does great work and I am thankful to have his help on this build. Another custom shop that helped out was Bastard’s Garage out of Florida. We had the custom suicide shifter built by them and it turned out great, Shifty Bastards are at the top of the custom bicycle scene when it comes to shifters, if you see a cool shifter more then likely it was made by them.
The challenges with this build were all about thinking outside the box and combining a clean smooth style with an old school feel. Once we got started, everything fell into place. We knew we wanted wood fenders and tank so finding the right guy for the job was key. Also the custom paint and pin striping are just some of the subtle details that helped create the flavor of Cream Soda.”
Bikes like these aren’t exactly the most popular style here in Texas, but if Clyde has anything to do about it, you’ll see more cool cruisers like this showing up on our dusty bike paths. It’s clear from the creativity and quality of his builds that he loves what he does. These rolling works of art that CJC creates gives each person their own unique way of seeing the world and having a blast doing it.
“We have many unique builds coming in the future. To those who follow and support what we are doing (from building custom bicycles to giving back and helping out in our communities) we want to thank you. Without all of you none of this would be possible!”
It’s not easy creating a business like this from the ground up and he attributes the success he has had to the support of his friends, family and his faith in God. If you’re in the market for custom bike or just about any other aspect of the hobby, contact CJC to find out how they can help you build your next dream machine.
