What if you didn't match the fork color with the rest of the frame. Gloss white might look nice and have a cool 60's vibe.
Or maybe use one of the colors from the seat tube decal Blue, Red,? would be easy to spray fork and see how it looks.

Thanks Skipton for the suggestions and props. I hadn’t quite thought of not matching. Might try to paint the fork but there is still the wheels I wanted to match. Maybe not match but compliment like your suggestion of gloss white. Maybe paint sissy bar plus other components. Maybe black out components. I’m so confused…

While trying to decide what to do with the 24” frame, I bought a fat slick for my wife’s 20” frame to see if it would fit . Found a reasonable deal on Innova Swifter Chopper 20”x3” tires (2 for the list price of 1). Knew that a 2.8” would barely fit if before the frame’s inward curve. Looked at Randy’s measurements for 24”x3” (sectional width=61mm) and someone else’s 24”x3 (sectional width =71mm), THANKS Guys! So used the rust old wheel originally from Mag Ray and stuck it on. The Innova is 2.75” sectional width! It will fit with a drop out mod (same as on the Spaceliner).

Know it looks like just recycling parts between the two bikes but now I know what works.
Really like the look of these tires on this bike! Know now I’m going to order a new aluminum-rimmed, single-speed wheelset. Think it will be light enough for a single speed. Can goof around with gearing yet too. Also, can send out the 20” frame for stripping now. My wife gets the head badge, chainguard and tall sissy bar, I get the 3 speed with shifter




That’s the Front/rear tire-diameter look I want on the 24” frame! Noticed the Jerald slick is becoming a favorite with the 24” muscle bikes so thinking about switching it up with an Innova 24”x3”. Not sure if I want to though. The 24” Jerald slick is slightly less than 2 lbs. The 20” Innova is 2.5 lbs. The 24” Innova will be even heavier. It could look really cool though and it IS a 3 speed.
But there is a drop out mod involved. Have to think about it for a while. ..

I never was into those and am soooo surprised they weighed so much! I like what youve done with the cranks, for sure.........BTW, when I was pulling wheelies with my motorcycles I also found out I fell down a lot more, so I quit doing that

Thanks Pick. Try to measure/draw/plan but getting bike parts in your hands and mocking up is the final Go/NoGo judge.

Sorry to hear wheelies hurt with your motorcycle. Going to practice so can step off when it inevitably flips too far. Not having an engine for power helps the control too


BUILDS Update:
20” Frame: Measured how far to cut out the dropout by seeing where the widest point of the tire would be aft of the frame curves. Thought I needed 1” but was worried about taking out that much, even though there is a lot of room with these dropouts (that’s one reason I picked the frame) Using some discretion, I went halfway and tried it and it worked.

About and 1/8" each side. Here is how 20x3 sits in the frame now:



The mod needs refining and the wheel/axle won’t be used in the final build.



Got the head badge off with some trouble. Rivets wouldn’t come out with inside head removed. Pryed the head badge off around the rivets with very little damage. Will be covered up by the new screws that are replacing the rivets. Wanted to keep the original condition of the head badge. Will clean and clearcoat. 20” frame is now ready to be stripped.


24” frame: So didn’t like the 26” or 20” front wheel/tire combos. Talked with the mech at Calhoun Cycle (recumbent specialists) about a 24” ISO 520 wheel (ISO 507 is normal with 1.5”tire narrowest). We talked details and he shot me a reasonable price for what I couldn’t find anywhere else in that price range. Many online were priced above $200 going up to $400 and didn’t want to invest that much.
So did a check to see if the ISO520 might work. With the Jerald slick and the Specialized Mondo (24”x1”), think it looks right. Will have it in a few days.

So I went to a swap meet yesterday:

Found some 24”x3.45” Hoggy Gs. Actually have one coming in the mail too.
Decided to try it after No Talent Clown’s comments (Thanks!!):

Still like the Jerald slick and will use it for particular rides (smaller 1.5” wide tread minimizes rolling resistance and square shape should maintain better straight ahead direction) but wanted something else that would fill the frame more. So mounted the Hoggy-G up thinking it might take a dropout mod. It didn’t! Very tight but have about that much clearance on my Spaceliner (with several hundred miles on it). With the Nexus rim (“1.75 inch ”), it came out to 2.625” wide. About 0.1” clearance each side. Will have to make sure everything stays in place once bolted together. They were ~1200g with tube (heavier than Jerald):





Like the way it looks. Should be kinda crazy with the 24”x1” in the front.

Got the recumbent 24” (ISO520) wheel and tire (24”x1”) last night.
Think the Wheel/Tire Combination final works. I’m relieved because I been through so many that I didn’t like. Have to admit, that if I knew the Hoggy G 2.625” sectional width tire would have fit, I probably would have gone with the wider (and significantly cheaper) 24” (ISO 507 “normal”) with the 1.5” width.

The ISO520 might have been more expensive but it’s really good quality. Spun it at the shop and it just kept going and going! Like that it’s high pressure too (~95psi). The dual wall recumbent wheel /hub are designed to handle the heavier loads and higher speeds similar to a road bike (or 170lbs adult on a kid’s bike )

Kept looking for about 2:1 ratio between rear:front tire. Jerald 2.125” with 1” front was my first choice. The Hoggy G 2.625” and 1.5” front would have been okay too. Now it’s sitting at 2.625” and 1” front. Was afraid it might look odd but think it looks good.



Lots of details now to get done. Pprefer shorter cranks (less than 6.7”) but don’t want to run 5.5” like the 20” bike. The short sissy bar is too narrow (small tear in new seat, Arghhh!) and I didn’t have any indication that it was going to be used when I ordered it. Started calculating gearing and the 52/19 is too much. In third gear, it would be harder than the Spaceliner, which is unnecessary. Going to paint the fork fiery red metallic and see how it looks.

My goal of getting a Jerald slick to fit on a muscle bike has been exceeded so I’m pretty happy. Hopefully by shoving the biggest slick possible on both Eliminators, I helped contribute to the Fat Tire War that seems to be going on.
Was definitely inspired by UdallCustoms’ Rust DX and CCR’s Stingray with 3”slick. And KingFish254 really upped the ante. Plenty of others going for the big meats. Build-Off 7 should be really interesting…

Throw on a low breadloaf seat, rearset of pegs off the back axle, and some low 'tracker bars and you'll have quite a gravity racer...........then you wont need any cranks .

Not much of an update
Got the 20” wheels on Friday. Goofed up the front wheel order (14mm 20" BMX is not like 14mm quick release style road/recumbent)
So instead, going to use the recumbent 20” (ISO 451, regular 20” is ISO406) picked up at a swap meet 2 weeks back. Will be putting on a blackwall 1 1/8” tire on it. Needs bearings gone through too but for $10… Like others, had a hard time getting the 3.45" back tire on the 1.5” rim but finally got it on and it works fine.

Here are the Big and Littles for my wife’s 20” bike only with a blackwall up front




Cleaned up the chain guard for my wife’s 20”bike. Lots of rust on the back side, now bare metal so will paint the back side silver and clear coat the whole thing



Will get the 20” in for stripping this week. Plan to paint the 24” fork this week.
My wife saw Terry 66’s powder coated Typhoon and is thinking we might be powder coating hers.
Now she has to think up a color, which may take a couple more weeks LOL


Rebuilt some older pedals for the 24” bike. It’s so nice to work on quality parts (Royce Union)

The Origin 8 triple cranks (145mm) have a bad chainline unless the most inside position is used (not really feasible) so a colleague suggested Krupi. Am looking at getting SINZ 145mm 5 bolt crank set

Need to confirm that the chain line will work. The YST axle is 127mm but the Sinz BB are 113mm and 118mm

Have not been making as good progress lately. Have a tendency to figure out the concept and then lose some interest in actually making it. Just want to skip to riding at that point Glad to have this thread to keep on task.

Was shooting for the Jerald slick but then I found I could go fatter. Once there, I couldn't go back
Agree with you about the paint and am going to manage my expectations about matching and just get it done.

With welding, you could add more to the dropout and put the 24" in a relatively straight forward way.
You can see (pic in middle of page1)where the plate might be added.
Even thought about dropping out the back like a modern single speed. I've got some sketches if you want to see them.

Small update:
20" Bike:
Frame is being stripped yet. Made a 1/2" open wrench ground thin to rebuild the 20" recumbent wheel
Started taping it off for painting the rim. My wife is still thinking about the color for frame and rims
Sick of trying to figure out how to straighten the 24" fork and am pursuing another
24" Bike:
Going to my LBS for help with finding a BMX short crank set up where the chainline works (3rd try)
If that doesn't work then will install the Sugino 170mm cranks and live with it
Hopefully am going to get a lot more work done tomorrow but all boring detail stuff
Thinking should just put the 24" bike together and try everything, then tear it apart again

This has got to be one of the most dragged out builds I've done
Got another build in the works too and have been thinking a lot about the Buildoff...
