Re: "The Salt Shaker" update 7/12 Pinstriped!

Postby HotRodJen on Wed Jul 14, 2010 8:02 pm

alrighty since i want to keep it on the cheap side since the $ went into the aluminum i didnt feel like finding and paying for skinny tires for this bicycle .. i looked at the old one yea theres a few cracks but it will be fine :) .. but talk about dirty and faded so with my insiration being bonneville i thought back to a great movie the world fastest indian and burt used shoe polish on his tires ...
well i so happen to have shoe polish so i "polished" my tires
Image kiwi works great!
it was time consuming b/c the detail in the tire
Image
Image can ya see the difference?
Image like new
Image
back fender is done , thats all the pinstriping i can do on it b/c the back rack will block the rest
and then ...
Image
i worked on making a templet for the wheel disc's
Image
thats just a pic of it layed on there there will be a over lap piece to size it to the rim better

Re: "The Salt Shaker" update 7/14 TIRES and more lines

Postby HotRodJen on Wed Jul 14, 2010 8:36 pm

now seats ...
the seat that was on it forget it i hate it , so i think im going to take my 49 schwinn leopard print seat and recover it in something just for now ... since the schwinn is down :( .. i should take a look threw my fabric and shirts see if i can come up with something fun ..

i also cant rock a front basket on the bike b/c the headlight ... so i picked up a crate to strap onto the back rack( i will put something to protect the paint) .. ill only prob use the crate for when im at bonneville to tug my camera gear/water /sunblock around ... im of corse painting the crate .. just a little bit :)

Headlights on my wife's bikes are always a deli-ma due to the baskets. I would like to hear if someone has a good solution for this.

Amazing work Jen.

Awesome bike you're building there, Jen.
I vote for more female bike builders anytime if they all meet the quality and creativity that you show us here.

@ aka_locojoe, what time did you get?

Please Jen, take no offense,....you see I DO dress as a pirate for the PA Ren faire. :D

On a side note,....the tires look better with the shoe polish, but i'd be wary of petroleum based products on rubber. They tend to break the rubber down over time. Leather is OK becuase the oils actually support and protect it.

For tire cleaning i'd use what I use on my car,....Westleys Bleche White to break down any dirt and grime build-up, and then a 50/50 mix of Armor All and water rubbed in the the rubber. The Armor All has UV blocker(sun tan lotion for tires) that protects the rubber. An after a few treatments the tire will take on a decent semi-shine.

Just my .02

no offense taken at all :) ya i thought there was something with shoe polish and rubber i didnt remember its alright if you see the tires at the somerville show they actually have some chunks missing out of the rubber , and after the salt at bonneville they tires i dont think will last much longer , but i will not use shoe polish on my other good tires :) where do you get westleys ?
