Jacked Up Pilot, few new pics

Postby MplsCoaster on Wed May 02, 2012 11:28 am

I’m in now too!
Was going to wait for a purchase to arrive and inspect before I started posting but couldn’t stand it anymore

I’ve gotta say that I had a great time in RRBBoff#6.
Found a lot of support and help, so thanks everybody!
It’s an honor to be in with such a talented group of people.

Built a Spaceliner for RBBBoff#6. Put about 300+ miles since last summer.
It’s the most fun bike I’ve ever rode and continue to enjoy it
Image

Learned some things from last year:
Don’t get too crazy with ideas that can’t be self made
Use a classy frame to start
Keep it fresh with new twists on old themes
Wheels make a big difference!
Make something I like and not worry about the contest
Shiny bikes turn heads (expect feedback on this one)
I like designing and riding more than building

So the plan is to build this CWC Pilot frame I bought last Friday
Have to wait for another week or so to get it, Arghhh!
Not sure what it’s going to look like when it shows up but got my Typhoon for backup
Image

The things I want to add to this bike that the Spaceliner didn’t have:
Better stance, more styling accessories, and more color
Got to figure out how I can ride a bike with “stance”

The general direction is Bare Metal (kinda) and Slicks (Big and Littles)
Not sure of the details yet (especially without the frame here)
My biggest learning curve is to build my own wheels

Still ordering parts so not much to show just yet
Got a huge bar to reach due to the amazing CWCs that are already out there
(Skipton’s Son’s 24” and Ratina’s 50s CWC to name just two), hope I can make something as cool
Thanks for looking
Steve

Another CWC!!

Get your bike riding quickly, I loved your photo diary of all the places your build-off bike last year took you.

Have fun again.

Steve, Thanks for this insight! You single-handedly assisted me in making a fairly tough decision. Just thought you ought to know!

BTW....LOVE the Spaceliner! Another BIG influence!

Thanks a lot guys :D, I thought I'd lead out with Liner then ease into the CWC
Knew I'd have CWC competition but can't remember who else right now
Youthgeye, I'll be trying to think of some new scenes outside of South Mpls
It's a great game, isn't it TM
Hope I don't disappoint X Crusier and Doon
Still figuring out what to do, lots of theories so far, Nick
Glad I could help Brett :D :D I wrote it down so I wouldn't let myself stray

So I can only think right now, decided to look at forks. I love a heavy negative caster fork
Decided to put a whole bunch together to see which ones I liked
Image
The 3 forks(mid bottom)24" Huffy Capri, 24" Schwinn Breeze, and 26" Schwinn Typhoon
The Schwinn Breeze fork on the Typhoon looks almost right with a S5 24x1 3/8(upper left)

My Royce Union next to it is one of my favorite nonspringers, love the way the top of the tire goes above the bottom of the head tube (factory setup with 26x1 3/8 tire),
So many others got it right and many I did weren't quite there

Hope it fits on the CWC and can make the truss rods work
Thanks for looking

Hope I can add something interesting to note :D

So got some things coming in the mail, but not the bike yet, Arghh
Needed to look at some things so using the Typhoon for now
Cleaned up the 24" Schwinn Breeze fork and put some slicks on
Think the fork rake looks pretty good with a 26 x 1.25 Specialized Fatboy
Image

Been thinking about doing this curved bar (maybe sprung) for a seat
Got my inspiration from a bike that Skipton pointed out at the Hand-made bike show
Will add a link in a bit (the one with Skipton's fenders)
Want to use something else that matches the curves of the CWC
We'll see how ambitious I get... (kinda like the uncovered tire better)
Image

So I mentioned Bare Metal (kinda),
Had this other idea that I've thought of since I got the Typhoon stripped
My buddy kinda chemically burned the frame with the stripper and I like it
So remembered having my Dad show me how to Gun Blue our shotguns
Tried it out on another frame my buddy stripped (closer to bare metal)
Bare metal
Image
First coat
Image
First coat sanded
Image
Second coat
Image
Kinda like the patina that it makes
Can sand it off and put more on or sand more off, relatively easily
Might try some heat on it yet to see if I can bring out the "blue"
Not sure how clearcoat would effect it but thinking bluing is a protective process anyway

What do you think?
Thanks for looking

One word: Awesome! Seems like we have a lot in common. We like the same frames, my build is bare metal also. Last year we used the same frames, with totally different outcome. So, I guess we have good taste huh??? Lookin great so far & I'm stealing ideas for my upcoming CWC build. Got to get my RRBO7 build done first before tackling the CWC though!
