Which oil for a Sachs Torpedo Duomatic hub?

Postby RyanPartridge on Fri Apr 27, 2012 12:23 pm

I'm looking for advice on what oil to use for regular maintenance on a 1968 Sachs Torpedo Duomatic 2 speed kickback hub. :?:

The hub has the little oil fitting for easy access.

Anyone use Phil Wood Tenacious oil?

Yup. I rebuilt it and greased the hub white lithium grease. As with any of my hubs that have an oil port I give it a little plain old 30wt motor oil when it needs it.

And that could even be 'non-detergent' 30wt, as you have no combustion acids, etc. for it to deal with, as in an engine. 1qt from your local 'farm supply' will last you about forever.

What kind of device do you use to inject the oil into the fitting on the hub?

It's not exactly a zerk/grease fitting...

I think they were designed for the old oil cans.

Yeah, but you really need the longgg curved one or an awfully small dia. can to get between the spokes! There are some syringes in farm supply that make injecting the right amount easy.

Anyone know where(and what size) I can get an oil syringe that fits into the little oil nipple on these old Sachs hubs?

Thanks!

The ones at a 'farm supply store' are in the large animal vet supplies.
