Awesome! I think I'll be stealing your flipped fork idea. It gives it a better look for sure. I'm a new guy with a '60 or so JC Higgins with the springer fork and Rick directed me to your build. That brass hand formed tank is sick too! Lovin' the bike tons!

Thought I might rig up a bell set-up. Got a piece of 3/8 rodstock.

After a few minutes of heating in the forge and hammering, followed by some twisting action:

The components.....the knob is bronze, i dug it outta a box of bronze scrap (p.s. bronze is around $5.50 a POUND now!!!) I lightly steel wooled it to get the crusties off, and cut a flange off.

And assembled:

I've been ridin around with it on the bike like that for a couple o days, it def needs some modifications!

Oxy-acetylene, ARC, MiG, or tig???? :P

Well I really just wanted to see the weld on your fender but seein' how you asked! How about a little aluminum GTAW? I was doing some today and it never fails that I have to do aluminum (throws ALOT of heat) on the hot days.

Dear Mr. ej599,
I decided I would try some of your "GTAW" (Great and Totally Awesome Welding). I thought I would share the welds I made on a toolbox I am making, since they were longer than half an inch like those found on the fender bracket in question. This is about as good as my "GTAW" gets.....well it is since it's been a couple of months since I did some real "GTAW". This was done with a big ol' fat mig welder with some of that nifty argon gas. Once I get back in practice maybe my "GTAW" will really be Great again. Anyway here are some pics:

As you can see they haven't been wire brushed or otherwise cleaned. That's because a few minutes later I ground them all off! My toolbox looks just splendid, I feel it will adequately fulfill its duty of carrying my knifemaking tools. Well that's about all I have to say on this particular subject, so until our next correspondence, good luck with your "GTAW".
Sincerely,
 BonEsHakeR

That is better welding than me. Last time I tried, I just weld the tip the material.

I remember that on the radio! I was more into the punk and new wave stuff like Oingo Boingo and Devo. it fits the attitude of the bike perfectly! picture one of the beasties riding down the street riding this bike, too funny.  Image

looks good to me better than i can do. oh and your bell is awsome but i asume your issues is the lever is too heavy? i ran into the same issue on the ratty truck with the first arm i tried. i originally wanted to use a really long arm sorta rat fink style but it was way too heavy.

That bike came out awesome and those are some good looking mig welds. Nice even bead. Most of the places I've worked use the 75%/25%-co2/argon mix because it's cheaper and is plenty good.

not to be a putz but....
Gas tungsten arc welding
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from GTAW)
Jump to: navigation, search
Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), also known as tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding, is an arc welding process that uses a nonconsumable tungsten electrode to produce the weld. The weld area is protected from atmospheric contamination by a shielding gas (usually an inert gas such as argon), and a filler metal is normally used, though some welds, known as autogenous welds, do not require it. A constant-current welding power supply produces energy which is conducted across the arc through a column of highly ionized gas and metal vapors known as a plasma.

GTAW is most commonly used to weld thin sections of stainless steel and light metals such as aluminum, magnesium, and copper alloys. The process grants the operator greater control over the weld than competing procedures such as shielded metal arc welding and gas metal arc welding, allowing for stronger, higher quality welds. However, GTAW is comparatively more complex and difficult to master, and furthermore, it is significantly slower than most other welding techniques. A related process, plasma arc welding, uses a slightly different welding torch to create a more focused welding arc and as a result is often automated.[1]

Check out Hank Youngs (Young Choppers and Hot Rods) 'The Flying Pan'. He tig welded a beautiful copper gas tank on that bike. Way beyond my skills!
