From This...To This...My First Bicycle Restore...

Postby Diamond Dogg on Fri Feb 10, 2012 5:20 pm

Whew, this took about 2 months to do. It's a 1955 Columbia Westfield. The only thing that's not original w/ the bike is the tires, which were shot. It does have the original rims. Banged out all the dents on the fenders. There was a lot of time spend w/ a wire wheel. :o) When I got down to the color after hours of a wire wheel, I realized it was a royal blue, which I kept true to the game for the repaint. I even got every nut and bolt rust free. Patina Central !! I was able to get a Columbia chain guard and headbage from RRB. Love the site !! Thank you to all that assisted, including a shout out to KickBackBicycles for the good deal and quick delivery on the chainguard. Got the chainguard from Kansas to Harrisburg, PA ! I also got the seat professionally reupholstered, which looks great. It all came together nicely. I probably have more into the bike than it's worth, but I had sooooooooooo much fun doing it as it was my first restore. Ready for the next one. Comments/criticism welcome. Thank you...!!

No way. Add up the value of enjoyment you got out of fixing it up and add in the value of enjoyment you will get riding it, and it is probably pretty inexpensive per hour of fun.
I tried being serious, but it was boring.

Beautiful bike, I really dig the paint scheme. What year/make is it?

The bike looks great. It's nice to see that you tried to keep it true to the original form of the bike. One criticism: either get some brown grips, or a black saddle. (probably the latter would look better.) As it sits now, the brown saddle looks out-of-place without any other brown to balance it. That's just me, though.

Love the paint work, and I wish i had your fender restoration skills....

Thanks Rob. You know I never even noticed that. The grips are original. Appreciate it, but I think I'll keep them as is. I wanted to keep the bike "classy" looking w/ that antique feel. Nothing bold, mild, but elegant not to sound too weird. Thanks again...
