50 stylish cruiser/boardtracker build.

Postby leaded on Fri Nov 11, 2011 5:43 pm

My build of a 50s styled bicycle /tracker/cruiser.
I´m living in Norway, where new rules on bicycle with engines got trouble now.(low hp,etc.) But, on opening is it, old ones, veterans they cant argue about. They have the possibility to be used legal on streets, as original build by factorys with their accessories, equipment.

Searching did came up with a old Norwegian made bike, a "START", made in Oslo, where the factory also delivered as option a 98 ccm engine, and the production ended in 1955 (all as the National Motorhistoric Museum could preference by their litterature) So this bike is old enough to be a veteran, and legalize the use of an engine (?) Discussion with the legalization office is started......

Original bike: Image

Sketched finish plan:Image

awaiting plan with the engine, first build it cycled, and then see the next step!

What do you think? Comments are always welcome!

SWEET! By the way, I kinda like the chainguard on the original bike! Very different looking! Can't wait to see the finished product!
My Favorite Color is Rust!

frame dismantled, cleaned, and removed paint & rust, reworked top bar, and other angle on the main "seat" tube, and rears.

(sorry if my "technical" english ain´t so good, but suppose mostly its understandable)

If its been a easy way, you could have got the chainguard.............but shipping from here is expensive.....well, i keep it on a shelf, perhaps it will come to use some time....

That is impressive frame work. It will be very interesting to watch you build the tank.
I tried being serious, but it was boring.

With the expenses on chroming in Norway, thats out of question...... and lot of the "shiny" parts has got damage by rust, not trough but in some surfaces (crank, steeringrod, etc.) Founded solution by chrome powdercoating all that parts. I got my own equipment on hobby basis.
Some of the parts done:
Image

Reworked the last of the frame, strengthen some joints, and welded in a new mid rod.
Frame finished blasted & primed. (planned to powdercoat it...but the color i wanted are not in assortment..)
Image

Then the tank is on work.....flat steel construction. Left side (the gasoline tank) is finished & leakproof..)
Bullet hammer, plastic rubber mallets & dollys did it!
Here is a test of placement:

Right tank work started.... even more mallet and dolly work:
Image

Shape is coming great, and follow the exact profile of the left sidetank. All time adjusting to get the right profile on both..
Image

The cycle got alu fenders, not in the shape i want.... rolled a raised shape in the middle all the way, made bigger "ducktails" shape on lower rears, heavy blasted and primed with etchprimer! (pics later on..)
The project runs on great, with not any drawbacks yet.....this day also a ekstra 3-gear hub/crank come along...well, will see if used.

Wow!!
Great job so far. I really like that you are building the tank yourself. That takes talent. Forget buying one, just go and make it yourself. I like that concept.

Thanks! I wanted a tank thats a little "fat", instead of the more flatteneds. The curved styles are belived to be more 50s style, with sweeping lines. Left half part is to be the gasoline tank, and right one only as a hinged cover for electrical (?),and storage room. Left side swings down on opening top lockers.
Also this frame top pipes are bendt after my ideas shape, and i supposed no original old style american bicycle tank would have a perfect fit, covering nearly the top pipe. (Who wanted to be shown between the tank parts)

Pics was a little dark, but the point is shown.....

There is excellent design and craftsmanship on this build!

How many ml of petrol will fit in the tank?

Cheers,
