Ah, 5 bucks a piece is very do-able.
...but, overhere in Holland these sort of trashcans are considered either vintage, retro, or even exotic. I'll have to buy complete cans and pay 40,- Euros a piece. (that's 57,- USD a piece!!!) If I have to pay thát kind of money I'd rather save that little extra and buy the spun aluminum 'trashcan-lids' from Moon-equipment

But your idea is worth a million bucks. I just have to find something else big, domed, and round, and made of metal.

The fake patina looks great. Just wondering how a shiny one would look on a wheel.

Here is another pic of still shiney disc on rim.

The shineyness really shows the wrinkles.

Thanks for posting ^this^ pic!

Yeah... you're right about that. It's a shame really. Although.. You still can get away with a lot on a ratrod-bike!

The ribs on these lids reminded me of the Starburst Moondiscs which I think are awesome. But like you said, shiny metal shows too much wrinkels. However, the 3-4 inner ribs are (almost) perfectly smooth! Why not paint the remaining outer ribs a dark contrasting color and leave the inner ribs shiny metal. I bet that will make them kinda look like the hotrod-classic steelwheel and hubcap:

Don't get me wrong by the way: I love your patina!! But your idea could be the start of something bigger... I see lots of spin-off hotrod ideas!!!

I saw this link before and it's really intriguing. I'd really like to try that one out, but it seems like a lot of work... Very rewarding though if you can that fiberglassed spandex right...

Visually YES!

But...

...I think cymbals big enough to fit 26" wheels won't be cheaper than real bicycle Moondiscs...
But please, do prove me wrong!

I FORGOT to mention the rim i made the discs for is a 24" rim, I haven't found lids big enough to fit 26" rims. But imagine discs on 24" rim w/3" a tire??

Bummer!
I just can't get used to the fact that a lot of Americans like to ride on childrens bikes...
  :P

But maybe these will also fit the modern 'deep dished' or V-shaped MTB rims you see more and more on low-end 26" bikes nowadays. Anyway, I'll be on the lookout for something similar you came up with: Cheap, big, round, slightly domed, and made out of metal...

How about grabbing some metal saucer snow sleds? This one is steel and already painted red. Plastic would be a lighter option. They are 26" total so could be cut down to fit inside 26" hoops.

Just a thought for smoothness! But I love the trash can lids! Plus these sleds are really expensive, but I'd bet there are cheaper options out there. I feel like they made aluminum ones when I was a kid?

The idea of a trashcanlid on a ratrod is perfect, but indeed: How cool would those smooth sled-discs be on a bike...
I can't imagine such a thing being expensive but then again I have not seen them over here in Holland... Also, reaching summertemperatures I don't think there are any snow-related toys in the stores anymore... Holland will reach the 77 degrees tomorrow! (and that's a good thing...)
You say, the're metal? Aluminum??? Man, that would be just perfect... Just sand off the paint while spinning the disc: Instant Mooncovers...

edit: Did a quick search. Snow-sleds ARE expensive. Toys are expensive... Kinda makes me glad I don't have any kids, yet...
