The Moscow Mule - A few better pics... 11/6/11

Postby GTCOMA on Fri Feb 25, 2011 7:54 pm

I got started on this one last night. I was able to unearth some of the original schwinn stenciled work around the headtube. it came out nice and ratty. Swapped out the rims and tires, put on a nice Troxel seat, cleaned up the chubby white grips, changed out the stem. Unfortunately the fork was bent, but luckily I had a fork from a 1980 Typhoon that fit nicely. the only odd thing about it is the old fork was about 3 inches longer. Not sure why, they were both 26" forks...
I also threw on a rear rack. i think I am going to try and insert a wood deck on it. I'm still not sure what to do about the paint on the front fork. The mismatch kind od adds to the rattiness, but it would be nice if it matched. I'm just afraid if i try to match it, it will look like a cheesy faux patina.

When I got it...

I tried paint thinner and goof off, but it was not making a dent on the old red brushed on paint, so I did it all with sandpaper and patience. It was probably lead based paint...so i probably killed a few brain cells from all the dust... :|

Looks really good!!!!! The brown tires go very good on this bike. Are you going to put a chain guard on it?

The guard is pretty mangled. It is bent and the mounts are all wobbly.

Looks good. I'm not going to lie I like the look of the headbadge just before you had it completely polished it up. Little bit of paint left behind looked kinda cool. The forks don't look too out of place but I'd try an off white patina on them just to see if you like it.

I decided to made a wood deck for the rear rack. I took a dremel zip wheel and cut off the spring and hold down bar thing. I went to the local woodworking shop and picked up a plank of Australian Lacewood and busted out the router for the first time. I am pleased with how it turned out... I also made another Moscow Mule copper cup holder.

Nice! I'm all about the wooden tanks

Lacewood is nice stuff, beautiful grain patterns and nice to work with.

Very nice. Grevillea Robusta.......we generally call it Silky Oak here. It's used a lot for furniture and Custom Guitars.
