A POURQUOY

Postby gilpet71 on Thu Jun 10, 2010 1:09 pm

It started with this old french bike (from 1963) and an idea...
Image

A POURQUOY... never heard of it, Google can't help out either
Image

No room for the rack in the plans I have for this bike, so it has to go...
Image

This needs some cleaning up
Image

That's better
Image

These will be filled up later
Image

Big problem. Old french bikes have french threading on the BB, right-threaded on both sides. So it won't accept de standard Bottom Bracket which is left-threaded on the right side...
Image

To solve this I filled the thread on the right side with some kneadable (is that correct english?) metal
Image

... and now it's time for some special tools :)
Image

The plan seems to work...
Image

Result: problem solved, right-thread converted to left-thread.
Image

Testfit with a spare bottom bracket, fits percectly !
Image

Nipples and spokes can't be saved, rims will be painted black...
Image

Hub seems in good shape but needs some cleaning.
Image

So... all parts cleaned, now I just have to put it all back together :D
Image

That's better.
Image

Unfortunately I don't have any more pictures from the build and paint process, not enough time and had to do a lot of things in a hurry.
It's a rattlecan paintjob and most of the parts I bought new from online shops in Germany and Holland. Too many new parts on this bike to qualify as a rat I guess... but I hope you guys can appreciate the result anyway.

Well... here it is:

Wow! That's a clean looking bike. Like it a lot.

Do you still have the front rack? Wanna sell it? Hit me up!

Cheers.

First: thnx to all for all the positive comments. :D

I bought these from http://www.singlespeedshop.com.

Crank!Basti wrote:Do you still have the front rack? Wanna sell it? Hit me up!

I still have it, but I already have plans for it. It's gonna be installed on my EMPO dutch transportfiets.

The champagne was great thx
Cruise Mania seems to be a great event to me, unfortunately I won't be able to make it. Perhaps for a future edition...

Gerwin Brommer wrote:I would have removed the black paint from the "stuur" , and polish it.

My initial idea was to order the clear alu-version but it was out of stock. So I went for the black version. And now I'm really pleased with the transition from clear-alu (silver color) of the stem to the black from the handlebars. Also because there are several more transitions like this: rims (black) to nipples (silver) to spokes (black), pedals (silver) to cranks (black) to chainring (silver)...

And once again: thanks for all your reactions. This site and all its members are a real source of inspiration...

Thx & Grtz,
Peter
