Highly recommend 16 gauge (1.6mm) or if you are not the best welder even slightly thicker. You can of course go as thick as you want but it will weigh more...

I buy .065" wall tubing, which if memory serves, is equivalent to 16g.

That's what I use or have used in the past

I run .085 but my bikes are long and low which puts more stress on the tube.
