Schwinn Woodland flip "King of the Road" (((Finished))

This is my first build and I was inspired by the rat rod flip posted a few months back.
I ride road bikes and this last year I started riding cross. So this got me wrenching on stuff outside my comfort zone. It probably did'nt help that I also started playing bike polo and needed a fixie. Anyway, that's another post.

So here is the original bike:

I picked up a rusty mountain bike for parts. Looks like this is going to work out just fine. I am trying to save on cost and parts since this is not for me personally. It's a project I started for a student of mine who is graduating and heading off to college somewhere in the state of Washington. I could not bare to see him ride off on his Wal-mart special. So the Schwinn flip was born. I will be using some of the parts from the "special" to get things rolling.

I don't have my own welder yet so I had a friend of mine piece things together. Those welds just make me drool!

That's a clean way to do it. I didn't bother to flip my rear drops, just cut some room for adjustment where it was.

I wanted to make this a three speed, but I don't want all the clutter on the bars. After weeks of looking at so many great bike builds I came across this idea for a twist shifter that was mounted on the top tube of a bike. I have been trying to come up with a solution to filling the old bottom bracket holes. I was originally thinking of putting speakers their for an ipod. I might have room on the other side to still do that. Instead I mounted a small piece of a handlbar and threaded that into the bracket. Now My shifter fits perfect and will look sleek just under the seat. I'm really getting excited about this build. I think I have the perfect color scheme too.

This is what I've been thinking about for a color scheme. This picture came from the gallery for the bike build off. Love the green and black contrast. I want to add brown leather to seat, handlebar grips and shifter under the seat. That should set if off right. Then for just an added touch maybe a few spots of red to complement the leaf green.

I like this style of seat, the leather makes it.

Hoping to get some color on the bike this weekend. I will have to settle for primer in the next few days.

Question:
When I finish the primer, should I wet sand that before I hit it with color or does it make a difference?

Got some work done on the bike. Getting some color on the frame is really motivating me. I also picked up a fresh new set of black cruiser bars instead of the chrome shorts. I test rode them and what a difference they make in stability. I stripped the seat down, however I'm still looking for some leather to recover it. Best part of my day was the finishing the primer. Next is a little wet sanding and then the first coat of Rustoleum.

Oh..and here is the shifter that still needs paint and a leather grip. That will come in time.

This weekend should produce some quality painting time.

What a great day! I got the forks and frame painted today. Now I need to be patient and wait for a few days to let the paint set and harden. I don't know if I should clear coat the frame to match the forks or not. I was thinking of wet sanding the frame and then polishing it, or maybe both? Is it better to wet sand and then clear coat? This build is about 85% done now.

I had some time to kill tonight. My wife likes when I have projects that I can do in the house and not in the garage. So I recovered the seat and added the leather grip to the twist shifter. Works like a dream and now the next step is to stich up the leather grips to match the shifter. It's coming along.

Tomorrow I'll try to wet sand the frame and see if I want to clear coat it.

It's a little late at night to start wet sanding the frame. Here are a few details I'm working on. I really don't like the pedals, but I'm trying to keep the cost down. The plastic is horrible, but the rounded ends are even worse. Here is my solution, what do you think?

This new shape is really growing on me. Who cares if they are plastic! But they are still missing something...

Thanks for the kind words. This is my first attempt at making a rat rod and I couldn't be more pleased with the direction and progress of the bike. I have a pile of bikes and parts beginning to pile in the garage. I'm sure by the looks of so many bike builds on this site, I am in good company. I have three projects in the works. A friend got me started here at Rat Rods and donated a beautiful, and by beautiful I mean rusted, Murray frame. Obviously, this will be a priority out of the three projects. I have to get in on this RRBB #7. Let me see if I can get some work done this weekend on the current bike.

My dad who passed away last July had this saying'

"Balls, said the Queen! I'd be King if I had too/two!"

It's the first thing I thought of when I came up with the name. Here are some bad pictures I took, it was late at night. I'll take more in the day light. Still have to add a few more details but 90% done.

Got some new pics taken today. I still need to stitch the new leather grips for the final photo shoot.
