Bracket mounted and one strut mocked up. Think I'll use that brown Rusoleum texture paint on the copper pieces, and maybe drizzle a little on the struts.
First I need to make another hardware run for some 5/16" acorn nuts...

Looking pretty cool front behind. The bike is telling me it wants tailpipes...

Careful there, it’ll want a motor next.

If you don't have anything for the hole in rack, it might look good to tie in the same wood tratment to match the tank.
It's a low res picture, but here's sort of what I'm seeing:

Exactly what I was thinking about doing.

The Rustoleum Multi-Textured paint works great for a bit of rust. Just added some to my fender and front fork / head light tonight. Silver / chrome parts always rust brown, rather than orange / red.

And, you can make PVC look rusty too. Here's one of my favorite Rust-ina jobs ever from BO #10, done by OJ Award winning 'Classic Rat' by @g-ratter.

Yeah. That's PVC pipe and bright shiny fasteners, post Rat-pocolyps !

Was able to get a little more done tonight. I have used that multi color texture paint from Rusoleum before, but had forgotten how long it takes to dry. Zzzzzzzzzz...
Finished the front struts, dismantled them and painted the copper thingys. [emoji16]
Got my Spaceliner booster rocket tail lights made up and painted. They will mount in rifle scope rings like the headlights, hanging from under the rear rack.

If you are still looking for blue stain for the wood, I've used RIT in the ancient long ago. Test it out first, but after a little experimentation it worked for me. And it's cheap!

Thanks. I think I'm fine with what I have, but I will keep the RIT in mind for future projects.

My blue chain came in today and my 22 tooth rear "Spacely" sprocket came in yesterday, so tonight I put the crank and front "Spacely" sprocket back on the bike. They still need cleaning. I just wanted to see how short the chain would be. Between the 46t front sprocket and the new 22t rear and the Spaceliner being about 3" longer between the BB and rear dropouts than my 21st century Chinese Huffys, I just knew I would need to ad some non-blue links to the chain. To my surprise, I actually need to remove a link!!! I think I'll wait until after the clear coat is on to install the chain.
Can't wait for my ChopShopCustomz laid back seat post to get here!

Kinda thinking about painting the crank and front sprocket black. Maybe with a little mustard to bring out some that free range natural organic rust. Not sure.

Now I'm not saying you should make another tank. But I am saying that you could. There's 3 months to go on this build and IF you're not happy then make another one, don't settle. Minwax makes a very nice blue stain, water based that looks like paint straight out of the can, but thinned looks great, allowing the wood grain to show thru. I've used it on furniture it's pretty good, better yet, there are also alcohol based stain powders you mix yourself. Lay on the stain once, fine sand it, and stain it again it will show the grain fantastic. Reranch is the brand I used. Their website is good, links to application videos and tutorials etc.

I recently found a nice red Spaceliner. I've always wanted one. Weird the painted ones are lower ended models and are painted right over the chrome, seems like it'd be more expensive to paint the low end ones (unless of course they were painting the flawed chrome ones...) I like what you've got going.

Carl.

I think the rusty sprocket and crank stay, just cleaned up a bit and greased.

I'm liking the tank more each time I look at it. Still have the rear "mini tank" to build to fill the hole in rear rack. Making it match the finish of the front tank will be a challenge. I may have to start over with the woodwork anyway. [emoji22]

Okay, forget what I just said about the tank. I made a new tank this afternoon, as well as the filler for the rack. It wasn't the color of the first tank that made me decide to do a second one, it was the overall shape that wasn't working for me. So I got to thinking about what Guitarl/Carl/Merl said about having three more months and decided I could take some time and try it again.
Also changed wood species. Not sure what that "Chinese" birch-like stuff was, but it didn't have a lot of grain pattern, nice for painting. This time I grabbed some good ol' Southern Yellow Pine plywood. I've used it before on "laminated" air rifle stocks. Should work out pretty well for an aged wood Spaceliner tank.
