I have a Cardiff that's a close match to a Brooks B17 by dimension and appearance on Retro Rocket and I have soaked its underside multiple times in glove softener and it is still like sitting on stone (can't do the top as it's painted). I think the problem is that there's some type of cloth adhered to the underside, probably to make up for inferior leather (it's thick, but I suspect it's cut however the hide can best be utilized for the maximum number of saddles rather than with consideration of the direction of the grain, so they reinforce it with the cloth to prevent stretching and tearing that can come with less than ideal grain orientation). Frame is pretty solid, though.
