I don’t think I’m keeping the megabasket on this one, but I’m definitely keeping it for a future build. I could haul all sorts of things in it. I think the frame has a “fast” look to it so I think the basket would be better suited on a bike that looks slower. I haven’t located the numbers on the frame yet , but from some of the early research I’ve done, it looks like a 58 Huffy Impala. No head badge.

Agreed on the basket, and the 'fast' look. Slicks, flames, etc would be cool....RaT oN~!

Began disassembly... going sloooooooooowwwwww. Letting headset and seat post set after a dose of T-9.

It’s disassembled! This is the first time since I got it last summer that I looked at it closely. Ugh! Crumby paint job on it . One cool thing is, if it’s a Huffy, it has a license on it from Celina, OH ( home of Huffy bikes ). One thing that makes me question the production year now is that if the license expires in 66, it seems that 6-7 years is a short time for it to warrant a homemade paint job. Maybe it’s older? The only numbers I found on it were under the bottom bracket, 811. [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

I don’t know yet. That wasn’t the plan, but it might be the NEW plan.

After scrubbing the frame down this evening with some steel wool and T-9, it’s revealing an interesting look. [IMG][IMG]
I also found some barely visible numbers under the paint. Looks like it begins with CH9 then a couple numbers I can’t make out, and then either a 46 or 48[IMG]

AND I found more history under some crusty, cracked old paint...
Were these old Huffy head badges decals? Painted on? Or was it somehow “stained” from a head badge that used to be there. Actually, I don’t think there are any screw holes for the badge.

    Should be a badge...

    IMG_7668JPG-1.jpg

    If that 'C' is actually a '0', I'm thinking it is a '60.

Maybe whoever painted it glued the badge back on after, and that is the image that is left. If you remove the paint, you may find the holes...or more likely, some busted off screws/rivets .

I’ve continued to “peel the onion” as Kingfish has put it, and I may keep the paint. Interesting thing concerning the head badge is that there are no hardware holes. I checked outside and inside the head tube.

That is strange. It is a cantilever...so it has to be after '57-ish...and it has that '66 license on it...and a definite imprint of the '60-ish badge (along with that era's chainring and guard).

    Here is the '60 catalog...
    https://thecabe.com/forum/media/albums/1960-huffy-dealer-catalog.2053/
...and it doesn't show any models that have a wrap around tank light that would preclude a badge. I would guess the next part of the onion to peel would be the chainguard...to see if there are any model specific graphics hidden under the paint.

After more scrubbing / sanding, the frame has taken on an interesting look. I think I’m going to keep it like this and try some linseed oil. Then I’m moving on to the wheels. [IMG]
