Ok, Pedal Pushers!!! Let's build a muscle bike!!!

Even longer than promised, I waited an additional day to get started! Now that I'm out of the penalty box, it's no-hold-barred mechanical mayhem!!!

So here I am at the end of the work session with installed bearing races in the head tube, on the fork crown, and on the bottom bracket...

This bike will be built on my wife's great-grandfather's workbench that I have had hidden away in the garage for years!!! Thanks, GPa Earl!!

A number of my tools are my dad's that have been passed on, and a few of my grandpa's old farm tools hang in the garage above my workbench. It is cool that you are continuing the "builder" heritage of the forefathers by putting that workbench to use. It probably has many inspirations and ideas trapped inside that weathered wood just waiting to come out!

Thanks Falstaff/Luke/OddJob!

I have been told many stories about GPa Earl from my wife and her mom/aunts. Hearty Midwest farmer that could build anything from nothing! Great hunter, fisherman, outdoorsman, carpenter...the list goes on! I'm so honored to have this piece as this is the type of person I think I am. I love to build anything!!! Love to fish and hunt (I think he was much better than I am, though!)

He obviously built this bench, and I love the personal touches it has...the drawer, the tool shelf, the handsaw brackets...and the vise. Love the vise on the left front side! it has an adjustable "jaw" by the metal bar at the bottom.

I'm really looking forward to trying new things and pushing myself. Thanks for the encouragement, guys!

Great bench and story.
My Grandpa was the same kinda guy, ground his own telescope lens and taught adult Bible classes too. I have a couple of his guitars. If we can just live up to the integrity they had we'll be fine.
Oh, the pink streamers in your parts stash
are gonna clash with that green...:giggle:

Carl.

Great paint! Great bench! Great tag!

Took a little time to tinker a bit...

Got the NOS Murray headset bearings greased up and installed the fork.

Then I installed the new 44-tooth sprocket on the new 6.5" crank. It was waaaay too long, so I dropped down to a 5.5" crank, greased the bottom bracket bearings and installed the crank.

Not a ton of progress, but it's still progress!!

I'm at a point where I need to make a decision on wheels!! I have always planned on using mags of some sort, so I've been seeking out all I can. At this point I've accumulated 3 sets.

My first set...

I really wanted alloy, so...

And then I found these...

So I'm going to try stripping this last set back to raw aluminum. Wish me luck!!!

Those are old Mongoose rims, I have a set on a 95 Schwinn Scrambler, and a second set I stripped too! But the rear hub has issues so I changed directions before the build off even started...
They are the best of the three IMO...

Carl.

3rd ones looks nicer , but i really dig the white
^ Agree with 1HP, that third set is the winner, but the white does go well with that cool seat!

Luke.
