So I'm trying to read up on Linseed Oil use on previous build on here. I'm also learning about the oil itself. But I'm seeing many different types like Raw, Boiled, Virgin, Extra Virgin, Diet, etc..... It seems that the Boiled is what's been used by others here, but why? What's the difference? Does one have an advantage over the other? Does anyone have before & after pics they can share of a RUSTY ride like mine? Thanks in Advance!! No....seriously. I stopped to type this in the small town of Advance, Indiana...

I don't remember the reasons why BLO is better. I used it for starsNbars in BO9 and also for the original paint frame only for Firewing in BO8.
I think there are quite a few threads on this here on RRB
I was thinking that there was a longer discussion on it, but can only find these so far.

Well......seems like the jury is still out on it. Must be a personal preference thing. I'm sure I have a rusty fork or something to try it out on first. Might give me something to do this weekend while I try to come up with a plan for my build.

I definitely want something that's going to dry. Don't want an oily frame forever.

The boiled linseed oil dries overnight if it's rubbed in and wiped off. If you put it on heavy it dries very slowly and gums up. The raw linseed oil never dries. It's used for shipping raw metal parts so they won't rust in shipping containers. If you have ever bought nuts or bolts that are sort of sticky, that's probably raw linseed oil.

One other thing, never leave rags soaked in l.o. wadded up or in a trash can. They can heat up and catch fire! Spread them out in a safe place and allow them to dry out before disposing of them.

    I hope that helps!

Also depends on the humidity. It took a while for starsNbars to dry last year.

I'm sure the Savannah climate didn't help at all...

I know we have linseed oil here, but it is expensive.
And not sure if it is boiled or raw? When I have asked in the past they look at me like what are you talking about its linseed oil.:43:
    Will try again today...

Found this, I guess if your in a hurry,or it didn't dry in places. Use a heat gun or mapp.
Ignore the guy warbling on and fast forward parts.

Uh Oh! I just used double boiled on my bike tonight for the first time and ran out of rubbing materials before I left it.
It's 1:30 in the morning now and the bike is not accessible, so I hope it's cool enough over night that the relatively wet coating doesn't get gummy. This'll be one case study and I'll update tomorrow.
I think it would clean up with thinner if need be. That part I payed attention to on the container!

UPDATE : All Good! The oil stayed fluid overnight and dried well in the days sun. All rags and steel wool went into outdoor water bucket.

The RenMan is correct, as usual. Boiled linseed oil (crushed flaxseed) chemically changes the oil to allow the thin layer (wiped down) to dry in the air more quickly. Since linseed oil is (was) a base thinner for most oil-based paints, it complements the OLD PAINTS used on old bikes quite well, bringing back the color and luster. I suggest using this material on all old orig-paint frames, whether restoring, or removing old house paints brushed on. Wipe on liberally, then wipe off with an old absorbent towel. It is also very effective using 220 or 320 grit sandpaper dipped into a bowl of it to remove old paints while protecting the lower orig. paints...(slowly) Solvent-based oils can damage your old paints. You also should read the above RenMan comments about fires. This can and will happen.

It's probably not. It should be printed on the label if it is.

Funkme....pertaining to my motorcycle in the above photo, the café tail section came from Greece. I had to pay a few extra $$ for it and wait a little longer to get it, but I liked it! I didn't want to have a generic one or the same thing everyone else had.

Greece have a lot of old things stashed away. But they have a funny way with dealing with things. If you want it,they think its worth a lot and ask crazy money.Or they say no and let it sit rotting in the yard:confused:....Shipping is not expensive and is fast...
Glad you found something from my end of the globe...

That sounds just like a yard sale here in the Midwest!

Coated the raw metal frame of Avocado in boiled linseed oil a couple of years ago. Love it. Never had to reapply, and still protecting the metal.
