Seems I also had a spacer issue - the bearing race on the sprocket side was too far back (away from the bottom bracket shell) and shifted the threads too far out causing me to run out of threads on the outboard side. Problem fixed with the right cup and spacer.

Here is a photo of the thickened spacer I ended up using to fix my problem.

So what was the seat post size solution?

Well, with the work done to this frame already, I was afraid to be hitting it too hard - but realized the post clamp bolt was crushed all the way in with no shim and no post. After opening that up a bit the shim went in and the 5/8" post to follow. I'm just so used to new frames where the micro millimeter fractional tube sizes are an exact fit. Things were more rudimentary in the 1930s'.

I think you’re right that the first one is for 28 wheels.

I'm not so sure about that DizzP....look at the width of the seat stays. It is most likely not a 28, but a 26. 28's have narrower seat and chain-stays. It also might not be a Hawthorne, but something else without the Orig. Head Badge intact. I agree, the parts choices didn't "fit" the frame.
