The guy I bought it off of said it was a 1940. I was in a hurry to replace my stolen bike and didn't really ask many questions. Just curious if it actually is from the 40's.

It may not be from 1940, but it's still a vintage bike. I'm guessing late 50's, based on the headbadge and the Perry hub. I don't think any definitive list exists for the serial numbers, but if those last two digits (apart from the others) read 58, then that's the year I'd go with.

Someone more knowledgeable may wish to chime in here--I won't be offended. My call is just a stab.

I'll bet there's a small "cw" next to that 53 on the right of the serial number, hidden by the paint. That's a 1953 CWC made Hawthorne. The early 50's CWC's had the 2 digit year to the right of the number followed with a C with a little w inside. 52-56 from the numbers I've seen.
The frame looks a little different from the early 50's I've seen and the chain guard is a much newer Huffy. The chain ring is Monark.
It's a good old bike nevertheless.

Here's a couple pics of a 53 CWC frame, and the serial number.
