Also, according to MurrayEliminator the purpose of the Overload tubes that Shimano and Schwinn used was to stop damage to the derailleur by some kid cranking back on the shifter when bike was not being ridden.
 
im leaning towards keeping my thumb shifter
i'd rout the shift cable on the dowtube keeping the top tube clean
if i want a stick i could rig a linkage to a front derailleur
 
so chickened out on that linkage and made a shim out of a chainguard mout and put it under a 3 speed cable clamp and ran the cable through and old derailleur coil caseing
looks slick!

the most flex is down at the bottom but i lined up the clamps and really torqued them down to keep them from moving on the frame.
This is a lesson to me to have braze-on brake cable mounts rather than clamp them on and maybe crimp thin wall tubes...
 
Good to see an older unfinished build rise to the top to get more done! First time I have seen your bike, read the thread through from the start, I like it! Nice job on the 26/29 set up and love the banana seat on an adult bike...
