Here is your chance to have a one of a kind, 1947 Huffman Texas Special.

I put a lot of work in this bike, and it is a sweet ride, and a great looker. The only true Huffman part left on the bike, is the frame. It has an alloy wheel set, rear is a Sturmey Archer 3 speed coaster, front is a sealed hub. Sits on 26 x 2.125 Electra Strat O Balloon tires, that are like new, new rim strips, new tubes. The crank is new, new bearings and cups, up front is a 52 tooth Monark chain wheel, on the Sturmey is a 20 tooth cog, the bike is fast, and not bad on hills either. Schwinn bow pedals. The chain guard is off of a vintage J.C. Higgins, only on there because it looks cool, the front bracket is jury rigged to work, will need to be addressed if you want to keep it, but it holds as is. Sporting an H.L. Flake Texas Special head badge, it just conveys that this is a Texas Special bike.

This bike was a labor of love, it was pretty much scrap when I got it. The frame was sanded smooth of the rust, 2 coats of etching primer and 2 coats of metallic dark copper paint to finish it up. A standard modern Huffy cruiser saddle sits on a Chop Shopz lay back seat post, affording a very comfortable ride. Truss rods, Hunt Wilde grips, cruiser bars, the bike looks great, gets compliments and rides great.

The last photo is what it was when I bought it.

I am certainly interested. I'm located in Stephenville about 125 miles from you. Would you entertain delivery of another 25 miles.

To a most appreciative enthusiast ... the bike is precisely what you described and put simply I could not be more pleased with your going beyond the call to transport it door to door. It doesn't get any better than that!!

Mike
you are very welcome Mike.

great meeting you. Also the drive was really nice, beautiful country down there. Then again, it is Texas, everywhere outside of the cities is nice.

Pierce a few things ... first finally took the Texas Special on a significant ride and was even more pleased with the acceleration, handling, and some stopping power, anyway all good.

Second you had suggested to me that you were moving into 28" early bikes (I think) that said, I'd be interested in your reasoning and any publication or otherwise dealt with that subject.

In closing, many thanks once again for efforts.

Stay safe,

Mike

don't know of any publications off hand.

The hard pressure tire bikes before balloon tire bikes, are a blast for me. Also, the are really old and rather fast. Mine roll on 28x1-1/2" tires, all are modern rims, but originally had wood rims on them.

Pierce doing a few tasks ... the chainguard repair and reset the Sturmey Archer to grab low better. While removing the front fork to service the hub it was noticed that the truss plate attached to the front fork was coming apart internally. That said for the life of me I cannot determine what bike it might have originally come off of ... do you recall?

Otherwise having a terrific time with the bike and thank you for any information you might have.

early 1950's Columbia.
The rods just set inside the truss plate, the other side originally had plastic jet tips, they typically have all decomposed by now.
