I build stuff.
Hey guys, well, I said I’d be building this year so I’m gonna go ahead and start. The last few years have been crazy, church got busy, then I left the church just over a year ago, and this school year I started substitute teaching and then got a full time teacher assistant job. Unless my wife tells me to get a summer job, my summer shall be pretty open for this build, though don’t expect anything crazy.
I talked about having my 11 year old build a bike but in the end, it wouldn’t be his vision and he wasn’t crazy about documenting, though if that changes I will bring him on board. 3 months is a long time to build a bike, haha.
So anyway, I had to move the trikes out of the way of the bike hidey hole door and move a bunch of junk to get the starting frame, it’s in here:
Yeah, it’s the dang Schwinn.
I got this with a bunch of other bikes a couple years back, it was probably rideable then, was on a friend’s family farm where over the years it appears someone kept old bikes in working order for grandkids and such to ride. Lots of hacked together junk and even more crappy spray paint.
On Sunday after I pulled the bike out I decided to strip it down to have a starting point for the build-off. The steering was rust locked as was the chain, so I thought for sure I’d have a fight with the seat post, but dang if it didn’t come right out.
Not sure if I’ll be keeping the large bolt that was cut off and filed down to fit.
Next it was time to remove the stem and headset and fork, and well, I just quit caring.
After soaking in PB Blaster and applying heat and a 6 foot breaker bar in the stem, it only bent. So I went medieval on it.
I’ve never been a huge Schwinn fanboy anyway.
I’m sure some Schwinn dudes would cringe.
But that pedal wasn’t moving and again, I didn’t care.
Headbadge actually came off easily.
Now for all that horrid silver spray paint.
Eh, not working great.
With a fire going in the backyard after we grilled out, I decided to get really mean.
Do you see it?
And for the temper nerds, it was only in there for a few minutes, the metal got hot but I’m not concerned that the steel may have been damaged, it’s just a dumb Schwinn.
So I pulled it out and dry steel wooled the remaining paint and then sprayed down with WD-40 and wiped it down and left it hanging in the shop and haven’t looked at it since. I’m curious what I will see in daylight.
